Application Process

How do I apply for graduate school?

Applying to graduate school requires time, organization, and attention to detail. Make sure that you begin the process early so that you’ll have ample time to gather any materials that will be required to complete your application packet.

Complete the application

Research the exact application requirements for the program and degree you are seeking. The application requirements vary by program and even by degree, make sure you are taking the correct admissions tests and submitting the appropriate supporting documentation.

Application Fee

The application fee required of U.S. citizens or permanent residents may be waived only in exceptional cases for low-income applicants and McNair Scholars. To receive the waiver, low-income applicants must submit a letter from their financial aid advisor or other officer qualified to verify financial need. McNair Scholars must submit a letter from their McNair Program Director verifying their status as a McNair Scholar in good standing to receive the fee waiver. Waiver request documentation should include the applicant's full name, address, date of birth, application semester, the name and title of the verifying officer and date of the request. Documentation should be sent to Graduate Admissions.

Letters of Recommendation

You should request letters of recommendation from individuals who are the most familiar with your academic history and potential. If you have been out of school for a number of years, you may submit non-academic references (e.g., employers). Please be aware that TAMUG does not automatically contact the references you may have listed on your ApplyTexas application. Letters of recommendation may be submitted through the Applicant Information System (AIS) after the ApplyTexas application has been processed.

Official Transcripts

Transcripts should be sent from each senior level post-secondary institution attended. An official statement of the award of the degree or diploma is required for each degree completed. To be considered official, all required postsecondary academic records must come directly from the registrar’s office and bear the seal and signature of the registrar of the institution.

Required test scores

Arrange for required test scores to be sent directly from the testing service to Texas A&M University at Galveston, the Office of Admissions and Records. Proof of English proficiency (TOEFL or IELTS) is required for applicants whose native language is not English. Check with your program for specific test requirements (GRE or GMAT).

Other documents

Be sure to include all the documents the application requires. All applications will require prospective students to write a Statement of Purpose. This may be accomplished by completing the Essay portion of the Apply Texas application online at  The essay should describe your background and your reasons for desiring to pursue a graduate education in your field of interest.

Make sure to pay close attention to deadlines for the submission of application materials and comply with them. See "Deadlines to Apply" for specific application deadlines by semester.
