The Math Placement Exam is a free multiple-choice examination used to assess a student’s math skills. It is an important tool to help your advisor determine which mathematics course you should take.

MPE Overview

The Math Placement Exam is a free multiple-choice examination used to assess a student's math skills. It is essential that you do not use a calculator on this exam. It is an important tool to help your advisor determine which mathematics course you should take. There are two MPE exams and students will be directed to the correct exam based upon their major.

All TAMUG majors must take the math placement exam online through Howdy BEFORE attending their New Student Conference; preferably prior to June 1.

Engineering at Galveston students who are a part of the College of Engineering must have a proctored MPE. Check your email for these communications.

Who Must Take the MPE?

Most transfer students are not required to take the MPE if transferring in prior college level math from another institution.

What Assessment Should You Take?

For these majors, complete MPE 1 (Math 147/151 assessment):

  • Marine Engineering Technology
  • Engineering at Galveston
  • Ocean Engineering
  • Marine Biology
  • Marine Fisheries
  • Marine Sciences
  • Ocean & Coastal Resources
  • USGA: Oceans & One Health

For these majors, complete MPE 2 (Math 142 assessment):

  • Marine Transportation
  • Maritime Administration
  • Maritime Studies
  • USGA: Marine Environmental Law & Policy
  • USGA: Maritime Public Policy & Communication
  • USGA: Tourism & Coastal Community Development

  • Go to the Applicant Tab
  • Follow the instructions for the Math Placement Exam

How to Interpret Your Score

For MPE 1 (MATH 147/151 Assessment)

  • MPE Score 22-33: Enroll in MATH 147/151
  • MPE Score 14-21: Enroll in MATH 150; PPP* is strongly encouraged
  • MPE Score 13 or Below: Enroll in MATH 150

For MPE 2 (MATH 142 Assessment) if taken Summer 2020 or later:

* PPP is the Personalized Pre-calculus Program: Students who enter the summer program are generated an online Personalized Study Plan (PSP). The PPP is a program designed to increase the success rate of perspective TAMUG students in calculus courses. This program is delivered entirely online and uses an array of technology-mediated strategies to help students strengthen their individual mathematical weaknesses.
