- Mr. Alonzo Alvarez Meola has been honored with the prestigious Outstanding Young Professional Achievement Award by the IEEE Industry Applications Society's Petroleum and Chemical Industry Committee
- CARES Lab members recently participated in the third Cooperative Agreement Technical Exchange Meeting at Northeastern University, Boston. The team showcased their progress over the past year and engaged in insightful discussions with other consortium members.
- The CARES Lab is excited to welcome three new members to our team for Fall 2024: Ahmed Lakhdar, Shaykh Siddiqee and Shorya. We look forward to their contributions and fresh perspectives as we continue to push the boundaries of research in our field.

- Irfan Khan attended the 25th IEEE COMPEL Workshop on Control and Modeling for Power Electronics in Pakistan, where he had the honor of chairing multiple sessions, contributing significantly to the discourse on power electronics.
- Our research article titled "AIS-NIDS: An Intelligent and Self-Sustaining Network Intrusion Detection System" has been published in the prestigious Elsevier journal Computers & Security, marking a milestone in our contributions to cybersecurity research.

- The CARES Lab congratulates four of its team members for successfully passing their qualifying exams: Zack McKinney, Alonzo A. Alvarez Meola, Muhammad Ashar Ayaz, and Aiman Siddiqui. Their hard work and dedication have set a solid foundation for their future research.
- The CARES Lab is pleased to welcome Dr. Jueming Hu, our newly appointed Postdoctoral Research Associate. Dr. Hu completed her PhD at Arizona State University, specializing in algorithm optimization. She is currently leading a proposal on path planning for unmanned underwater vessels, bringing valuable expertise to our team.

- Dr. Irfan Khan hooded Syed Rahman for his academic achievement at the Spring 2024 graduation ceremony held at Reed Arena on May 11, 2024. The CARES lab team congratulates Dr. Syed Rahman on his Ph.D. graduation and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavors.

- Syed Rahman, the first graduate student of CARES lab, passed his final defense exam, held on 8th March 2024. His thesis, titled “Electric Vehicle-Induced Grid Impact Analysis and its Minimization”, focuses on minimizing the grid impact of electric vehicle-induced charging load with innovative non-wired alternative-based distributed generators and active filters. The CARES lab team congratulates him on achieving this milestone, and he is now officially Dr. Syed Rahman.

- Syed Rahman's conference paper titled: "Extended Kalman Filter-based Predictive Maintenance of High-Voltage DC/DC Converter" is presented at the prestigious IECON 2023 Conference (Oct 16-19 2023), in Singapore. IECON is the flagship conference of the IEEE Industrial Society. Syed Rahman completed this work during his 6-month internship at Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratory (MERL).

- CARES Lab welcomes our new members of the team. New members who joined in Fall 2023 are Zack McKinney, Alonzo A. Alvarez Meola, Muhammad Ashar Ayaz, Aiman Siddiqui, Ravindranath KV, and Zahid Hussain.
- Dr. Jianwu Wang, Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) met with Dr. Khan and his research team at Texas A&M University on September 11, 2023. During the meeting, potential topics of collaboration are discussed.
- Syed Rahman presented his Ph.D. research work, as a part of the 2023 Energy Institute Graduate Fellowship Showcase on September 25, 2023. Syed Rahman is a 2022-2023 Energy Institute Fellow. This event was organized by the Texas A&M Energy Institute, to provide a platform for the fellowship recipients to showcase their research outcomes.
- On September 11th, Zach McKinney and Alonzo Alvarez Meola presented a paper titled “Integrating renewable energy behind the meter in upstream oil and gas operations part II” at the 70th annual IEEE PCIC conference in New Orleans.
June 2023
- On June 1-2, 2023, a delegation from Texas A&M University Galveston visited the Maritime University of Gdynia in Poland to discuss the possibilities of cooperation, especially in student exchange, joint projects, and research proposals. Dr. Khan was part of the delegation. He also gave a guest lecture on "HVDC Transmission Technologies for Offshore Wind Power Plants (Power Electronic Solutions for Farther & Deeper Waters)."
- Dr. Khan visited the Department of Energy at Aalborg University, Denmark. He visited the Center for Research on Microgrids (CROM), a leading European research center led by Professor Josep Guererro. He met Professor Yajuan Guan and Professor Amjad Anvari-Moghaddam, who showed him the lab facilities, after which they talked about potential collaboration opportunities.

- Carbon Brief spoke with Dr. Khan on how jobs created by net-zero transition will ‘offset’ fossil-fuel job losses in Republican US states
- TAMU Galveston team, including Dr. Khan, visited World Maritime University in Malmo, Sweden, for future collaborations.
- Dr. Irfan Khan was presented William Paul Ricker Distinguished Faculty Award from Texas A&M University at Galveston. The award includes a plaque, a watch, and a payment in the amount of $2000.

- Dr. Khan spoke on a panel covering the convergence of physical and cybersecurity in ports at the 4th Annual Port of the Future Conference on April 4, 2023.
- Dr. Khan gave a tutorial on “Design of Solar PV and Battery Storage Powered Electrical Loads” at the IEEE 2023 GreenTech Conference organized in Denver, CO on April 18-20, 2023.
- Dr. Khan was the Special Sessions, Tutorials & Workshops chair at the 2023 IEEE GreenTech conference in Denver on April 18-20 (https://ieeegreentech.org/committee/)

- Dr. Khan visited King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and King Abdulaziz University (KAU), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to meet with faculty and visit labs for possible future research collaborations.
- Dr. Khan was a keynote speaker at the 2023 4th International Conference on Computing, Mathematics, and Engineering Technologies (iCoMET 2023) organized by Sukkur IBA University in Sukkur, Pakistan, on 21-19 March 2023.
- Newsweek interviewed Dr. Khan on the State of Texas's initiatives to support renewable energy, especially wind, solar and energy storage.

- The Guardian interviewed Dr. Khan on how red states lead the US in solar and wind production.
- Three research papers, authored by the CARES lab research team, are presented at the Texas Power & Energy Conference (TPEC) 2023. In addition, Syed Rahman was awarded the NSF travel grant to present his research at the conference.
- Research Article: "Tahir, Y., Khan, I., Rahman, S., Nadeem, M.F., Iqbal, A., Xu, Y. and Rafi, M., 2021. A state‐of‐the‐art review on topologies and control techniques of Solid‐State transformers for electric vehicle extreme fast charging. IET Power Electronics, 14(9), pp.1560-1576" is recognized as a "Top Cited Article 2021-2022" in IET Power Electronics. This is the second consecutive year that our article has been a top-cited article.

- Syed Rahman joined the Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratory as a graduate research intern. He will be working on diagnostics and predictive maintenance of dc-dc converter intended for aircraft application.

- Dr. Khan visited Pakistan to give a series of talks and interactions at various top universities of Pakistan, including UET Lahore, LUMS, UET Taxila, UOL, and Superior. This visit led to several new research collaborations.
- Dr. Khan was invited speaker to give a talk at his alma mater, UET Lahore, Pakistan.
- Dr. Khan was a Keynote Speaker at the 2022 IEEE International Conference on Emerging Trends in Electrical, Control, and Telecommunication Engineering, ETECTE'22, organized by the Department of Electrical Engineering, The University of Lahore (UOL).
- Superior University, Lahore, Pakistan, invited Dr.Khan to Superior Technical Symposium 2.0 - themed on Exploring New Horizons for Research & Innovation power.
- Electrical Engineering Department at UET Taxila, Pakistan, invited Dr. Khan to speak on the impact of EV fast charging on low voltage distribution systems.
November 2022
- Syed Rahman has successfully passed the preliminary examination, satisfied the residence requirement, submitted a satisfactory dissertation proposal, and completed all formal coursework on the degree program. Mr. Rahman is now admitted to candidacy for the degree of PhD with a major in Electrical Engineering.
- Dr. Khan joined the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSCE), TAMU, College Station, as a Joint Affiliated Faculty. Now he can recruit and supervise graduate students from CSCE.

- Dr. Khan proposed a special issue on High Efficient and Reliable Microgrid (DC/AC) with Artificial Intelligence Techniques for the Renewable Energy Journal-Elsevier.
