Centerpoint Energy Under Channel Electrical Wire Project
Electrical power to Pelican Island is currently transported to Pelican Island by above-water power lines. Throughout campus history, high winds, tropical systems and Galveston channel traffic have initiated catastrophic power outages to Pelican Island. Most recently, power was interrupted by Hurricane Beryl for 3 days.
Construction began at the beginning of November to move the electrical wires from above-water to under the Galveston channel. Centerpoint contractors are mobilizing on both sides of the channel to bore under the channel to place concrete encased HDPE conduit. Once the new wire has been run and electrical power transferred to the new line, the Centerpoint poles on the east side of the Pelican Island bridge will be removed. The poles on the west side of the bridge will remain to support telecommunication lines to the Pelican Island.
The project is expected to complete by the star of the next hurricane season that begins June 1, 2026.
