Texas A&M Maritime Academy Hall Repairs

Construction and renovations to the Texas A&M Maritime Academy Residence Hall began in August 2024 to address water intrusion caused by tropical weather systems.

About the Repairs

Hurricane Beryl, followed closely by two additional tropical weather systems with high rainfall, caused a failure in the Texas A&M Maritime Academy Residence Hall exterior that allowed water intrusion to over 200 resident rooms.

The repair is being conducted in three phases by third-party contractors coordinated through the Galveston Campus Executive Team, the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, Campus Living & Learning and the Office of Administration and Auxiliary Services. We expect the project to extend into the spring semester, with the construction timeline dependent upon the weather.

Additional details will be shared as they become available. Sign up for updates.

Message from the Col. (Ret.) Michael E. Fossum

November 25, 2025

Good afternoon, Ags.

The fall semester is quickly coming to a close, and I know everyone is ready for Midnight Breakfast, to BTHO finals, and to spend the holiday break with friends and family.

I’m reaching out with an update on the Texas A&M Maritime Academy Hall project. We have completed phases one and two of the project and are beginning phase three, which will permanently restore the interior and exterior of the building. This has been an extensive project with multiple phases, and we anticipate it being completed by summer 2027.

We will begin phase three over the winter break by reducing building capacity by 25 percent and begin repairing rooms in small groupings. Staggering construction in this manner reduces daily disruptions and will allow students to return to a completed room more quickly.

To reduce building capacity, students will be temporarily relocated to on- or off-campus housing while their rooms are being fully constructed, and then return to the Maritime Academy Hall as groups of rooms are completed.

Our Campus Living and Learning (CL&L) team has sent information and instructions to students relocating prior to winter break and during the first weeks of January. As work progresses, CL&L staff will continue to reach out with additional details and information, including storage and moving solutions.

Thank you all for your flexibility and patience. I know this project has been frustrating for some of you and that you may have questions or want to share concerns. You will soon receive an invitation with additional information on a virtual briefing prior to the winter break. I also encourage you to visit the Texas A&M Maritime Academy Hall Repair Updates page, share this email with family and friends and have them sign up for future project updates.

Thank you for your Aggie grit and determination! You are truly what makes this campus special.

Repair Projects

Repair projects will be influenced by weather conditions.

Project One: Completed
Remove water-impacted materials, dry rooms and partially restore rooms, along with installation of temporary flooring.

Project Two: Completed
Temporary dry-in to seal the building exterior.

Project Three: In-Progress
Permanent interior and exterior restoration. This project is anticipated to be completed by Summer 2027.

Work on the exterior and roof of the building will be split into multiple phases, each with its own start and anticipated completion dates. The building's capacity will be reduced by 25% until this project is completed. Additional details and visuals for each phase are available on the Texas A&M at Galveston Administration and Auxiliary Services website.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will the campus accommodate the 25% capacity reduction caused by ongoing work?
How will the campus accommodate the 25% capacity reduction caused by ongoing work?

To accommodate the 25% capacity reduction, Campus Living and Learning has been in contact with non-cadets to relocate them to another residence hall for the spring 2026 semester. To help finalize arrangements, these students have been asked to complete the Spring 2026 Semester Relocation Form, available online, by November 25.

This form allows them to provide their housing preferences, including preferred residence halls, roommates, address specific accommodations and more. It also notifies the Campus Living and Learning staff if students intend to request off-campus housing or leave the university.

My student has been notified that they need to move out of the Texas A&M Maritime Academy Hall. What happens now?

Campus Living and Learning is in contact with non-cadet students required to move from Texas A&M Maritime Academy Hall to new spring 2026 housing assignments and is making every effort to minimize disruption and make accommodations where able. This includes:

  • Keep requested roommate pairings;
  • Assist with moving materials;
    • Campus Living and Learning is currently working on a moving and storage solution for impacted students.
  • Allowing students to move directly into their new spring 2026 room assignments prior to winter break, when possible;

Staff understand this process can be especially taxing on out-of-state and international students. All efforts, considerations and support will be made available wherever possible.

If you or your student needs additional assistance, please contact your housing coordinator or housingapplication@tamug.edu with any questions.

Campus Living and Learning has identified a moving and storage solution for those being relocated from Texas A&M Maritime Academy Hall to other residence halls on campus. Additional information will be provided by residence hall staff as it becomes available.

If you or your student needs additional assistance, please contact your housing coordinator or housingapplication@tamug.edu with any questions.

What if a student needs to stay on campus after the end of the fall semester?
What if a student needs to stay on campus after the end of the fall semester?

Students are typically required to depart their residence hall rooms 24 hours after their last final, or for students with finals on December 16, no later than noon on Wednesday, December 17. Graduating seniors are allowed to remain in their residence hall through noon on Saturday, December 20.

Students who need to stay over the winter break need to complete and submit a Late Stay Request form available on the online housing portal. Students impacted by the partial closure of Texas A&M Maritime Academy Hall will not be able to stay in their fall room assignment over winter break and will instead be relocated to their spring room assignment or an alternate space.

If approved, students may be billed at the daily rate for their assigned hall. The charge for a late stay is listed on the Late Stay Form and will be applied immediately to your fee statement. Review of Late Stay Requests will continue until finals week.

Please contact your housing coordinator or housingapplication@tamug.edu with any questions.

What about students who want to move off campus?
What about students who want to move off campus?

Students who do not intend to reside on campus in the spring should complete the Petition for Contract Release, available on the online housing portal, as soon as possible. This includes students who believe they meet the requirements to live off campus, as well as students who are not returning to the Galveston Campus due to transfer, change of curriculum, graduation, withdrawal or other circumstances.

The following groups will be eligible to live off campus starting spring 2026:

  • Students graduating in December 2026.

In addition, the following groups of non-cadet students with a fall 2025 TAMMAH room assignment will be eligible to live off campus starting spring 2026:

  • Students who turn 21 years old prior to January 12, 2026;
  • Students who have parents with an established (at least two years) residence in Galveston County.

Students requesting to live off campus must submit a Petition for Contract Release, available online, for approval by Campus Living and Learning. The priority deadline for off-campus residential approval is Monday, December 1, in order to avoid being included in initial spring semester billing. If approved, students must have all items removed from their residence hall and be checked out before the close of the fall semester.

Please contact your housing coordinator or housingapplication@tamug.edu with any questions about breaking your housing contract.
