Dr. Irfan Khan Receives $639,673 Office of Naval Research Award

Dr. Irfan Khan, assistant professor of marine engineering technology at Texas A&M University at Galveston and director of the Clean and Resilient Energy Systems Lab, has received a $639,673 award from the Office of Naval Research.

The project, "Enhancing PLC Code Maintainability: LLM-Assisted Style Consistency for Naval Application," will develop an automated tool to enforce coding standards and improve the clarity of programmable logic controller (PLC) programs used in shipboard control systems. By reducing technical debt and making future updates easier, the research will strengthen the long-term readiness and resilience of U.S. Navy systems. The resulting technology is expected to support safer, more reliable and maintainable automation across the fleet.
