TIO - Undergraduate Research Fellows    

Research and Graduate Studies offers Texas Institute of Oceanography funded Undergraduate Research Fellows. The purpose of this Fellowship is to provide research experience for the undergraduate students.  Recipients will be required to present project results at the TAMUS Student Pathways Symposium or at the TAMUG Student Research Symposium. Recipients will be paid as a Student Technician ($9/hr).  Additional funds for travel to present results at a scientific meeting may be requested from the Research Advisory Council.   

To be eligible, a student must:

  • Be a Junior or Senior (not graduating prior to December 2018)
  • GPA > 3.00 overall A&M
  • Be registered full-time
  • Have a faculty sponsor for the proposed project
  • Be available to work 10 hours/week on the project

Sponsor must agree to:

  • Provide instruction
  • Provide laboratory space (field work is also acceptable)
  • Provide equipment and supplies (TIO funds are for salary only)
  • Monitor hours worked and approve regular time sheets verifying these hours
Preference will be given to students who have been accepted into the TAMU Undergraduate Research Scholar Program and/or TAMUG Honors Program.  In general, students may not receive support from this program in multiple years.
This is intended to be a collaborative process between the student and their faculty advisor. Students are expected to do the actual writing of the proposal.

Application materials must be received by deadline and include:

1) Application Form

2) Narrative (not to exceed 500 words, double spaced, 12 pt) in the style appropriate to scientific discipline

a. Title of Research - should be marine oriented

b. Description of Research (include Objectives and Methodology)

c. Benefit to Student’s Education

d. Relevance to Marine Research in Texas

3) Letter of Support from Faculty Sponsor

Applications will be reviewed by the TAMUG Research Advisory Council and successful applicants will be notified by April 23, 2018. All compliance requirements (IACUC, IRB, etc.) must be met before funds will be released.
