First-Generation Student Support

At Texas A&M University at Galveston, approximately 25% of undergraduate students identify as first-generation college students. Through the Academic Coaching Program within the Center for Academic Learning Support, first-generation students, faculty, and staff have access to dedicated resources, mentorship, and guidance to help them navigate college transitions, build meaningful connections, and foster a strong sense of community.

Who are First-Generation Students?

First-generation students are the first in their families to attend college. We define this to mean that neither parent has received a 4-year degree.

First-Generation Support Purpose

The first-generation support initiatives provide holistic support and resources to first-generation, undergraduate students located on the Galveston Campus, helping them to navigate their college experiences.

  • Ease the transition into college life – Helping students adjust academically, socially, and personally.
  • Provide coaching and guidance – Offering peer and staff coaching to assist students in their journey.
  • Foster a sense of community – Creating connections through learning communities, events, and a dedicated student lounge.
  • Offer financial support – Providing eligible students with grants and scholarships.
  • Enhance academic success – Equipping students with tools, workshops, and coaching to help them thrive.
