Marine Biology Graduate Program
MARB 403:
Cetacean Behavior and
Behavioral Ecology
|
The Department's strategic location on one of the Gulf's most productive bay systems, and Galveston's semitropical climate, provide Marine Biology students and faculty year-round access to a variety of intriguing and environmentally-sensitive habitats comprised of estuarine and marine ecosystems. Students receive extensive exposure and invaluable training in the conservation and management of Bay and Gulf ecosystems through intensive field work in salt marshes, oyster reefs, seagrass meadows, rocky intertidal zones, open surf, and coastal waters off Galveston. Marine Biology at Texas A&M University at Galveston focuses on five main areas of development: fisheries, marine mammals, oceans & human health (aquatic health), wetlands and biodiversity. MARB's diverse faculty and low student-to-professor ratio provide undergraduates with unique opportunities to participate in world-class research programs targeting a variety of marine related concerns. The MARB faculty consists of twelve full time professors and one professor emeritus whose research interests include molecular biology, microbiology, genetics, anatomy, taxonomy, physiology, behavior and ecology of estuarine/marine flora and fauna. Dr. Jay R. Rooker was recently named to the McDaniel Chair in Sustainable Marine Fisheries at TAMUG. The one million dollar McDaniel Chair in Sustainable Marine Fisheries supports the complex and challenging role of understanding fishery ecosystems and the impact of nature and human activity on these systems. Proceeds from the endowment will support Dr. Rooker's research, teaching and professional development activities in the field of marine fisheries. Dr. Rooker joined the faculty of the Department of Marine Biology at TAMUG in 1998. He holds faculty appointments in the Department of Marine Science (Galveston) and the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences (College Station). He received a Ph. D. from the University of Texas at Austin and was a Post-Doctoral Research Scientist at the University of Maryland Chesapeake Biological Laboratory prior to coming to TAMUG.
The Gourman Report consistently regards MARB as one of the top
undergraduate marine biology programs in the nation. TAMUG has been ranked among the top
five-hundred schools in the
nation by the Time/Princeton Review and the as one of the "Best
of the West" by US News and World Report.
The MARB department offers the following areas of study: Marine Biology: A general biology degree program which provides an excellent education in the biological sciences through studies undertaken in a unique coastal environment. The curriculum offers broad training in comprehensive biology while emphasizing studies in vertebrate zoology, coastal & wetlands biology, fisheries biology, and aquatic animal health. Marine Biology with License Option: Students in the Marine Biology program incorporate courses from the Marine Transportation program leading to a Merchant Marines Third Mates license. Marine Fisheries: Students are trained in the principles of fisheries management and aquaculture including identification, sampling methods, and economics. The Certificate program is: Biomedical Science/Marine Biology: A program developed in conjunction with Texas A&M University, College Station where students prepare for veterinary or medical technology careers by splitting their time and coursework between College Station and Galveston to obtain the best courses that both campuses have to offer in this field.
