Texas A&M Galveston receives 16 scholarships from the prestigious Terry Foundation.

Terry Foundation LogoThe Terry Foundation, a Houston-based scholarship program, has expanded its program to include 16 students per year at Texas A&M University at Galveston for the fall of 2014. Each scholarship will be renewable for up to four years.

The Terry Foundation scholarship program was founded to provide scholarships to outstanding Texas High school graduates for attendance at public colleges and universities within the state.  Established in 1986 by Houston philanthropists Howard and Nancy Terry, the foundation has assisted hundreds of Terry Scholars in meeting the founders’ goal of helping young people to help themselves.

“We are delighted to announce the establishment of the Terry Foundation Scholarship program at Texas A&M University at Galveston,” said Terry Foundation Executive Director Yvonne R. Moody.  “The institution joins ten other Texas universities in hosting the largest private scholarship program in the state. Terry Scholars at the university will benefit from the school’s outstanding academic programs and growing national reputation for excellence. We are honored to be associated with an institution of such prominence.”

Selection criteria for Terry Foundation Scholars includes a record of academic success, demonstrated leadership and a need for financial support. As part of the selection process at Galveston, the foundation will choose the 16 Terry Scholars from a pool of 32 nominees.  Interviews for the 2014-2015 academic year will be conducted in April 2014.

The foundation is looking for students who need the scholarship, will take full advantage of it academically and show the drive and dedication to be leaders at their universities and later in the communities in which they live.

Admiral Robert Smith, chief executive officer of Texas A&M University at Galveston said that the legacy of Howard and Nancy Terry has helped hundreds of young people achieve their dreams through their foundation’s scholarships.

“Their vision of promoting leadership, hard work and service lives on in their generosity and now provides opportunities for our students to achieve their career goals,” Smith said.  “Those careers, made possible by these scholarships, will benefit generations to come in ways we can’t yet imagine. We at Texas A&M University at Galveston are extremely honored to be associated with this caring and visionary couple and the staff of the Terry Foundation.”
