June 18, 2013

Today a group of cadets were treated to a tour of the Austal Shipyard in Mobile where the JHS and JASV vessels are constructed for the US Navy. The shipyard is a marvel of technology and efficiency as the vessel are all aluminum and completed entirely in indoor facilities. Thanks to Tammy Lobaugh for setting up the Austal visit and to Austal for a great tour of their facility.

June 10, 2013 Port Everglades, Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

Sailing at 1400 for Mobile. After what started out as a bit of a rough ride in route and on arrival Friday, Port Everglades has turned into a great port stay for the cadets.

On Friday a luncheon was hosted for 20 cadets by the Port Everglades Association. Friday it rained 13 inches in Ft. Lauderdale, which put a damper on the Friday evening reception. We did have some port officials show up and a few die-hard Aggies from the South Florida A&M club.

Saturday the rain departed. Asst. Superintendent for Operations Tammy Loubaugh arranged a tour of the Star Center which trains deck and engine officers for the American Maritime Officers. The have an impressive facility with simulators for both deck and engine officers. They are just ramping up their Kongsberg DP simulator so that was interesting for all.

Today a group of cadets were treated to a tour of the Allure of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world. She is an amazing vessel and the cadets were treated to a great ship tour and lunch aboard the ship.

We are sending a second group in the morning to tour the Star Center on Monday the 10th and then departing at 1400.

Best regards,
