Colonel Michael E. FossumTexas A&M University at Galveston will hold the institution's Summer 2017 Commencement at 9 a.m. on Saturday, August 12th at the Grand 1894 Opera House, 2020 Post Office Street in Galveston.

The commencement of the Galveston campus will be part of the largest number of graduates for a summer term in Texas A&M history.  The total, 2,252, includes the Texas A&M campuses in College Station, Galveston and Doha, Qatar.

Chief Operating Officer, Col Michael E. Fossum, USAFR (Ret.) and former NASA astronaut will lead the ceremony.  "The world is crying out for leaders with integrity, who strive for excellence, who are loyal to those whom loyalty is due, who consistently demonstrate respect for others and live their lives in selfless service," said Fossum.  "Those are the characteristics taught to the students of Texas A&M University including our campus in Galveston.  I am very proud of their accomplishments and know they are well prepared for the futures ahead of them."

To complete the ceremony, the student with the highest grade point average in the class will be observing a Texas A&M Galveston commencement tradition by striking a ship's bell eight times.  This observance is a reflection of the time-honored sea tradition of striking a bell eight times on a ship to acknowledge a change of watch.  Here it recognizes that the current graduating class has achieved their goals and the graduates are embarking on the next stage of their lives.
