Texas A&M University at Galveston remembers George Mitchell.

July 26, 2013

MitchellIt is hard to express in words what George Mitchell meant to Texas A&M University at Galveston, its students, faculty and staff, and to me personally.  To say he was a great man with foresight and generosity isn't enough.  His contributions to this university literally made this institution possible.  The very land it sits on was donated by Mr. Mitchell in honor of his mother and his support never waned.  But more than that, it was his friendship that we shall always cherish.  He will be deeply missed, but his spirit shall go on forever within this university.
—
Admiral Robert Smith, Chief Executive Officer, Texas A&M University at Galveston

Mitchell benefited programs, professors and students at Texas A&M Galveston with the endowment of several chairs at the university including Dr. William Merrell, the George P. Mitchell Chair in Marine Sciences; Dr. Bernd Wursig, the George P. Mitchell Chair for Sustainable Fisheries and Dr. Samuel Brody, the George P. Mitchell Chair for Sustainable Coasts.

Mitchell has always kept the university in mind.  In 1973, he donated a house in Galveston to become the residence of the university’s chief executive, which remains today the residence of Admiral Robert Smith III the university’s current chief executive officer. In 1990, he delivered the May commencement address.  Even the palm trees on the campus are a result of a gift from Mitchell.
