TAMUG students offer help for the holidays

Students at TAMUG are known for volunteering in the local community. The Sea Aggie spirit of giving is evident year-round, but especially during the winter holiday season.

Shelly Fordyce, TAMUG associate director of Student Activities, says the students’ altruism during the holidays is especially meaningful.

“Throughout the year, students cook for the Women’s Crisis Center, collect school supplies for students, and support the Boys and Girls Clubs in Galveston County,” says Fordyce. “In the spring, students participate in the Big Event, the largest one-day student run community service project in the nation.”

Fordyce says that student service projects during the winter holiday season are special to students.

“This is the season when they really want to give to others who are in need,” she says. “Students are busy with finals, but they feel the need to take time to give back to our local community.”

Both men and women student leadership groups, ocean-related student organizations and Lambda Kappa Alpha honors student organization are already involved in volunteer efforts during the holidays.

TAMUG’s men’s leadership organization, known as BACON (Brotherhood and Community of Nous), is working to obtain caps and gowns from former students for adults to wear as they receive their General Education Diploma.

TAMUG’s women’s leadership group, Aggie SOUL (Sisterhood of University Leaders), are volunteering to collect funds for the Red Kettle activities for the Salvation Army. They are also “adopting” a child for the holidays by providing the child with clothes and toys. In addition, Aggie SOUL is planning a Christmas Party for children at the Galveston Women’s Crisis Center.

TAMUG’s student Dive Team is participating in the Salvation Army Red Kettle holiday fundraisers, while the Sail Team is volunteering to decorate the Ronald McDonald House for the holidays.

Lambda Kappa Alpha, the student organization which is part of the Honors Program, raised $1,000 for the Ronald McDonald House during the organization’s annual Bean Cook-Off.

Acts of community service, such as this, demonstrate the strong commitment Sea Aggies have in serving others throughout their community, state, nation and world.
