Nintendo Switch 2 Review
By Sean Holmes
TweetThe upcoming release of the Switch 2 has many Nintendo fans both excited and disappointed.
The new console, releasing in June, has upgraded capabilities when compared to the Switch, as well as many anticipated games; however, Nintendo has decided to make some questionable business choices…
Most alarmingly, the price. The Switch 2 cashes in at around $450 for a console that is supposedly targeted for families.
For reference, the original Switch cost around $300 when it was first released in 2017.
Additionally, the games themselves are getting a price increase.
For example, Mario Kart™ World is reportedly going to cost $80 and possibly even $90 for a physical copy. Other games already released that are being ported to the Switch 2 are also going to cost $80 for the upgraded version.
The jump to an $80 price tag is astounding considering the increase to $70 games only started around 2020. Unfortunately, game companies know they can get away with steep prices because fans will likely buy the games anyway.
Many of the new games will also be included on the regular Switch, so if you do not mind a bit of lag and worse graphics, you are still able to purchase the games for a more reasonable price.
There are rumors of physical copies not even being a game card, but instead a game code. So you would possibly be spending $90 to not have the physical media.
The situation is particularly frustrating because physical media are free of alteration from their publishers and take up less storage on the consoles.
On a more positive note, the new games coming out on the Switch 2 look very fun.
Fans of Metroid, Tomodachi Life, Pokemon, Kirby, DK, and FromSoftware games have much to look forward to with the Switch 2’s release.
Many details about the console are still up in the air, but one thing is for certain: my wallet will be in the possession of Nintendo by the end of this year.
