Marine Engineering Technology and Marine Sciences majors will complete the MPE 4 as a proctored exam. It will be taken over Zoom, and a password should be required to access the exam.

 

CESS, MARB, MARF, USGA-OOH

Coastal Environmental Science and Society, Marine Biology, Marine Fisheries, and University Studies: Oceans & One Health majors will complete the MPE 4 as a non-proctored exam. It can be taken independently at any time prior to your new student conference.

Anyone who has not taken a college level calculus-based math course before enrolling to the university must take the MPE.  Most transfer students are not required to take the MPE if transferring in prior college level math from another institution.

Statistics courses do not count as a math course for MPE exemptions.

Use the practice MPE exam in Howdy or via this link, under the Placement Practice Tests section of the math website, to help you prepare for this 90-minute exam. Practice MPE scores will not be used as placement scores. Only the official MPE exam score can be used as an official placement score.

  • Log into Howdy
  • Go to the Applicant Tab
  • Follow the instructions for the Math Placement Exam
    • You should take the MPE 4 Practice test

You will receive your MPE score immediately after completing your exam, but it may take up to 24 hours for your scores to be entered into Howdy.

Proctored MPE Registration for Fall 2024 Incoming Students will open by April 

Please note that registration is only required for those students taking the PROCTORED MPE (Marine Engineering Technology and Marine Sciences majors).

Proctored MPE sessions will be given before your new student conferences in May and June. All students that have not completed a college level calculus-based math course must register for a proctored exam time. You are able to register for one MPE retake if you do not place into calculus.

MPE retakes will be scheduled in July and August. You will not be able to register for a retake until June. You can choose to complete a Personalized Precalculus Program (PPP) online course with the TAMU Department of Mathematics to help you study for a retake. This course is not required for a retest and does not guarantee placement into calculus.

Reasonable testing accommodations are provided to allow students with documented disabilities an opportunity to demonstrate their skills and knowledge. In order to coordinate testing accommodations for the Math Placement Exam, the student must submit documentation of their disability for review.

All science majors at TAMUG currently accept MATH 150 as a math credit, so you will not be behind if you place into MATH 150. 

Marine engineering technology majors will not be following their four year degree plan exactly if they take MATH 150, but may be able to catch up to the degree plan by taking summer courses.

You can complete the equivalence of MATH 150 at a community during the summer and transfer this course to Texas A&M University. You can ensure you are taking the equivalent course by checking the Transfer Course Equivalency page.

You can pass a Pre-Calculus CLEP exam to receive college credit for MATH 150. Any questions about the exam or registration should be directed to the CollegeBoard.

You should register for the MPE if you have taken an AP exam, and you have not received your scores. Most AP scores you take senior year will not be available until July, so you will not know if you have college credit before your new student conference.
