This program is one of the highlights of the undergraduate and graduate experience, with students immersed and learning in unique cultures, making life-long friends and connections.

Detailed Overview    

The modern world is characterized by its connectivity. Due to the relationship between humans and the ocean, the field of maritime business administration is universally needed. With the Maritime Business Administration Department, students have the opportunity to experience new places, people, and adventures while elevating their education. Courses in places such as the United Kingdom, Denmark, and Greece have been offered and give students the chance to expand their perspectives and collaborate with experts and students from around the world in some truly remarkable locations.


This program consists of a Fall semester (August to December with the arrival a week prior to school beginning) at the Copenhagen Business School (CBS). The Copenhagen Study Abroad is an incredible experience for those who attend because students will be allowed to focus on their education, while also giving them the opportunity to visit neighboring countries or landmarks that Europe has to offer in the student’s free time. CBS is a prestigious business school in Europe as it offers multiple business accreditations and provides the students with close working relationships to the industry given their proximity to major maritime businesses and the Copenhagen Stock Exchange.

Copenhagen Business School (CBS) was established in 1917 and today hosts over 19,000 students. The campus is located in Frederiksberg District, a bustling municipality of the Denmark Capital City Region. CBS is one of the first universities in Denmark to encourage students to take part in extracurricular activities. Because of this, they have the most student-run organizations in all of Denmark. Every year CBS welcomes over 1,200 exchange students from around the world. Its presence in the financial markets globally and as the capital of Demark make it a desirable location to study abroad, so you are sure to meet plenty of other students on exchange.

Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark as well as its most populous city. With ties all the way back to the Vikings, Copenhagen boasts a wealth of culture and history. It is the center of economics, government, and culture in Denmark. It houses one of the major financial centers with the Copenhagen Stock Exchange. In a ranking of the richest cities, Copenhagen placed third in terms of gross earnings. The city is sprawling with an abundance of bridges connecting the waterfronts, historic districts, museums, and parks. It is known for being bicycle-friendly so getting around is easy exploring the city and what it has to offer! This fits right into their plan to become carbon-neutral by 2025.

  • This program is limited to students at Texas A&M University - Galveston
  • Students must have upper-level classification by the beginning of the exchange; can be a Sophomore at the time of application
  • Proficiency in English or Danish
  • Have a minimum of 3.0 G.P.A.
  • Be a TAMUG student for at least one semester prior to application
  • Attend TAMUG for at least one full semester after the exchange
  • Provide official transcripts from all college-level institutions attended


The program will include visits to the largest port in Greece, its managing agency, a number of maritime firms, and the University of Piraeus (in Athens) where contemporary maritime research will be presented and discussed. Students will also tour Athens, two maritime museums, and visit the island of Aegina. Greece has traditionally been considered a leader in the maritime arena, with successful shipping operations spanning centuries. Top maritime firms are located at the port of Piraeus, a hub of economic and multinational enterprise activity. Students will be able to interact with a variety of organizations, institutions, management agencies, the local university, and maritime culture in Greece.

This will be an incredible experience for those who attend because students will be given the opportunity to visit several maritime companies, museums, historic sites, and an island in Greece. This International Maritime Management Experience course, MARA 493/MARA 673, will count as 3 credit hours, and the duration of the program is a two-week experience starting around the middle of May.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 
  • Visit the Piraeus Port Authority, GAS, and Cosmoship
  • Visit maritime and nautical museums in Athens, Piraeus, and the island of Aegina
  • Guided visit to Cape Sounio (the site of ruins of an ancient Greek temple of Poseidon)
  • Visit and tour Acropolis Museum
  • Participate in a Traditional Greek cooking workshop
  • Visit Delphi and other cultural landmarks

Courses: All students are required to take a total of 3 credit hours in the Summer to participate in this program. Students should meet with their academic advisors to ensure they meet eligibility requirements and that the courses are degree applicable.

Malta, Geneva, and London    

This unique opportunity to visit three countries is a truly interdisciplinary endeavor in one trip where students will learn from hands-on maritime business & law cases, interact and network with students and faculty from other departments/colleges, and go on guided site visits to the Port of Galveston/Houston plus law firms. The basic requirement for this program is that the student is interested to learn about maritime business, law, and policy. This course will have a three-phase program structure which consists of an on-campus meeting, a two-week experience abroad, & a Zoom meeting with the students following the conclusion of the trip. Some of the main locations that students should look forward to visiting are the IMO Headquarters, London (UK); UN Palais de Nations, Greece; & IMLI, Valletta (Malta)

About the Malta, Geneva, & London Study Abroad

The Maritime industry is a highly regulated sector and its main characteristic is being international by nature. The (United Nations (UN) and its specialized agencies (like IMO) are responsible for designing and implementing several of the regulations that are in place in the maritime sector. UN-related organizations (like UNCTAD and the WTO) also deal with several aspects of the regulation, arbitration, and development of world trade. This project focuses on developing an immersion into the United Nations (UN) activities related to maritime transportation activities. This immersion is structured in three steps. First, the students will take a one-week course on campus for familiarization with the UN’s organization, concepts, challenges, and trends; second, the students will participate in field trips to three different strategic locations of UN offices. The first stop will be at UN Headquarters (IMO) in London; the second will be at the UNCTAD office in Geneva, and the third stop will be in Malta where the IMLI (International Maritime Law Institute) is located. Finally, we will return to campus to summarize and assess the trip’s learning outcomes.

We anticipate that this project’s major impact will be on the students’ global awareness and cultural fluency about the international maritime affairs related to trade, public policy, and law. Students attending this initiative will be offered a multidisciplinary perspective of the international maritime reality given by professors that are experts in International Policy, Law, and Business and by experiencing a field trip to strategic decision centers in the UN structure.
