The requirements for certification included 8 courses, online and face-to face, which included development of an online syllabus, lesson plans leading to defined learning outcomes, and application of Turnitin.com, Camtasia, Respondus and Study mate and other sophisticated software.
Undergraduates have never been included in this program. TAMUG Writing Lab coaches and Faculty Advisers held a training conference in Dec. 2010 and participated in a series of workshops with ITS. In February of 2011, our inquiry about including students in the Spring series was met with “there is no provision for students in this program.” A few days later, we received an email asking “Are these the students we met in December”? We responded, “Yes.” Their follow up was simple “We will accept these students.”
The impression our students made on the ITS staff in College Station opened the door, and of twelve people system wide who participated in the Spring-Fall series, five are on the TAMUG campus, four are Writing Lab staff, and three are students in our office.
Comments on the quality of TAMUG students and the education they receive are more than polite words. Throughout the entire Texas A&M system, there are three students who hold Professional Certification as Online Instructors. All three are leaders in the TAMUG Writing Lab. The quality of our students and the close collaboration between the Writing Lab and CIS made it possible for us to expand our services to students campus wide.
