CAMPUS RESIDENTS (INCLUDING U.S. MARITIME PROGRAM STUDENTS) ACCEPTING HOUSING IN THE FALL SEMESTER ARE REQUIRED TO SIGN A NINE MONTH CONTRACT AND ARE NOT PERMITTED TO MOVE OFF CAMPUS FOR THE SPRING SEMESTER.
Residence Halls
Texas A&M University at Galveston has three residence halls. A Dorm and B Dorm are conventional residence halls with interior hallways and double occupancy rooms approximately 21 ft. X 12 ft. C Dorm has double occupancy rooms of comparable size, but the rooms open directly to the outside.
All rooms are furnished with single beds, dressers, desks, chairs, telephones (with local service), and bookcases. The windows have blinds and each room is equipped with cable television connections. Except for one floor in A Dorm, all rooms are arranged in suites with two rooms sharing a bath. The rooms in A and B Dorm are furnished with wardrobes in place of closets. Students are responsible for coordinating their own long distance service.
Rooms may be decorated as preferred providing fire and safety standards are observed and no damage is inflicted on walls, ceilings, and floors. Substantive changes, including painting, are to be approved in advance by the Residential Services office (409) 740-4445. Stereos and T.V.s are allowed, as well as small refrigerators, blenders, coffee makers, small microwaves, and popcorn poppers. No waterbeds, ovens, or hotplates are allowed. With the exception of seeing eye dogs and fish for aquaria and the official campus mascot, animals are not permitted in residence halls, campus food service areas, campus-owned residence halls or other campus buildings except where authorized.
A housing application and deposit of $250.00 is required of all students to be assigned and live in campus housing. This deposit is not applied toward semester housing fees (listed below). The deposit is similar to an apartment damage deposit and is refunded once a student has left the University.
Completing a housing application does not imply that campus housing or admission to the University will be granted nor does admission to the University imply that on-campus housing is available. Direct correspondence concerning campus housing to the Student Services Office, TAMUG, P.O. Box 1675, Galveston, TX 77553-1675.
Roommates and Assignment Dates
Two students requesting each other as roommates must have their housing applications, indicating the preferred roommate's name and Social Security Number, submitted to the Housing Office prior to initial assignments being made for the semester. Generally, assignments are made by July 15 for the Fall semester, January 10 for the Spring semester, and May 20 for the Summer semester. The Housing Office will make every attempt to accommodate roommate requests but may be limited by the availability of space. Students applying for housing after the initial assignment date will continue to be assigned as space is available, but roommate preferences cannot be guaranteed.
Students NOT enrolling in U.S. Maritime Service License Option program or
Naval ROTC
With limited exceptions, all Texas A&M University at Galveston students
are required to live in campus housing and participate in the board plan if
campus housing is available. Active duty veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces,
married students, students residing with their parents, and students enrolled in
9 hours or less are generally exempt from the mandatory campus housing and board
requirements with appropriate documentation. Applications to live off campus
should be submitted to the Student Services office.
Student enrolling in the U.S. Maritime Service License Option program or
Naval ROTC
With very limited exception, all U.S. Maritime Service License Option (Corps
of Cadets) and Naval ROTC (NROTC) students are required to live in campus
housing. A student meeting one of the following exceptions may be considered by
the Superintendent of the Texas State Maritime program for permission to live
off campus:
a. the cadet is married and living with spouse
b. the cadet is a single parent and guardian
c. the cadet is a veteran with at least 180 days of active duty (not including active duty for training)
d. the cadet is 21 years of age or older and has junior status in the Corps of Cadets
A cadet meeting one of these limited exceptions is not guaranteed permission to live off campus. Only once the Superintendent gives approval on the off campus application can this permission be assumed.
Since new license option and NROTC students are required to live on campus , students will be able to participate in the Corps only if campus housing is available to them. To be considered for a housing assignment, students who elect a license option program of study must apply for housing and notify the University before July 15 of their intent to student the license option program. Failure to receive campus housing does not preclude students from enrolling in the degree program of their choice, but simply restricts participation in license option programs until campus housing is available.
A reservation may be canceled and deposit refunded upon written request prior to July 1 for the Fall semester, December 15 for the Spring semester, May 10 for the first summer term, and June 20 for the second summer term. Any cancellation after these dates will result in forfeiture of the deposit. Refund will be made in accordance with University policy for a student graduating or withdrawing from school. Before a refund is made, all debts owed to the University will be deducted from the deposit.
Ethernet (Internet access and e-mail)
The University has provided computer connectivity in all
residence hall rooms using Ethernet technology. These connections allow a
student to access the Internet and an e-mail account from the room. Ethernet is
different from other technology in that it does not utilize the telephone that
is in the room. Instead, an Ethernet line is provided as a separate connection
in the room. While it resembles a telephone jack, a telephone or modem connected
to this jack will not operate. Instead, the computer must be equipped with an
Ethernet card, which may be purchased at most computer stores. Call the
Computing and Information Services office at (409) 740-4714 for more information
on the type of Ethernet card. Finally, our digital phone system prevents the use
of modems or computer fax communication.
Room rent is due in full by the beginning of each semester. If a student cancels a room reservation, refunds of room rent will be made in accordance with the university's refund schedule. Board is required for all campus residents. Meal fees are refundable in full prior to the first day of classes, after which time refunds will be made on a percentage basis according to the university's refund schedule. As an estimate for planning purposes, the 2001-2002 fees are detailed below (board includes required taxes):

1. What size mattresses are provided?
Mattresses are standard twin
2. When will I know who my roommate is?
For students arriving in the Fall, assignment letters are mailed in mid July
that include tentative room location, roommate's name and phone number. For
students arriving in the Spring or Summer, roommate and room location
information are available upon your arrival.
3. When can I arrive?
To better serve our students during check in, we ask students to arrive the
day before their first scheduled activity.
4. What happens if campus housing is full?
TAMUG is growing and there may be a possibility that some students desiring
to live in campus housing will not be accommodated. In that event, the Housing
Office will work with those students to identify local off campus options and
potential roommates.
