Galveston Gateway Program

Seibel Learning Center

This program helps incoming freshmen become prepared for collegiate academics. Admitted students complete university coursework during the Summer II term before fully entering the University in the Fall.

Program Overview

Galveston Gateway helps incoming freshmen become prepared for collegiate academics. During the program, students take two (2) courses towards their majors and/or University core curriculum during the Summer II Term.  Students will reside in campus housing, in addition to participating in the Galveston Gateway Living Learning Community (LLC).  After final exams, fully admitted students will be allowed to move their belongings to their Fall housing assignments prior to check-out.

Program Outcomes

There are 3 possible Fall admission outcomes after students complete Galveston Gateway:

  1. Galveston Gateway good standing: continue as a full student for Fall semester

Students have met the minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA, have attended all classes, including the Galveston Gateway learning community course, adhered to University Rules and Regulations, demonstrated a strong commitment to their academic achievement, and exemplified the core values of Texas A&M University: Excellence, Integrity, Leadership, Loyalty, Respect, and Selfless Service.

  1. Galveston Gateway probation: continue as a full student for Fall semester in probationary status

Exceptional situations may warrant a semester of probation. These exceptions are very rare but may include additional accommodations for learning disabilities, additional mathematics preparation, or developmental education needs.  In all cases, the student has demonstrated a strong commitment to their academic achievement and the core values of Texas A&M University.

  1. Galveston Gateway suspension: student status is discontinued

Students have fallen significantly short of the minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA, and have major discrepancies with class attendance, and the demonstrated commitment and/or adherence to University Rules and Regulations.

Program Admission

Students do not apply to Galveston Gateway, but are offered a seat in the program by the Admissions Office.  It is important that Galveston Gateway students understand that the successful completion of the program is a prerequisite for continuation at the university.

Gateway Requirements
  • Must maintain a 2.0 or higher cumulative GPA to remain in good academic standing with the University. This means maintaining a “C” average or higher and no “F’s” or “U’s” in the Summer II term.  Failure to do so will result in disqualification for full admission the following Fall semester.
  • Must attend all classes. This includes weekly Galveston Gateway Learning Community meetings and activities. Time outside of class may be used to their discretion.
  • Will reside in campus housing unless exempted by normal residence life policies.
  • Must adhere to all University Student Rules and Regulations.
  • Must adhere to the Aggie Code of Honor.
  • Will show respect to all TAMUG students, faculty, staff, and guests.

When I am not scheduled to be in class, am I required to stay on campus?

No. While we highly encourage using your free time to study, familiarize yourself with campus resources, attend campus workshops/meetings, and interact with your peers, you may use your free time as you see fit, while adhering to the university rules. How do I get registered for summer courses?

Your Gateway courses will be selected for you using your declared major, assessment scores, academic strengths, & course availability. Please ensure that you have taken care of all required steps on time so you can be registered for coursework promptly. By June 18, you can log onto HOWDY to view your course schedule. 6 credit hours are needed for full time status. If you need to speak with an advisor about changes to your schedule, please contact the Seibel Learning Center by June 22 at (409) 741-4343.

Can I take more than two (2) core curriculum courses while in the program?

No. The recommended course load is vigorous and we want your course load to help you obtain full admission in the Fall.

Do any of the Galveston Gateway courses have tutoring or supplemental instruction?

Selected courses will have tutoring or supplemental instruction. These services are free. You can schedule an appointment with your advisor via TutorTrac.

What is the Galveston Gateway Learning Community course?

This tuition free, zero (0) credit hour course aids students in building metacognition, goal setting, stress/time management, effective learning, and test taking skills while interacting with campus faculty, staff, and peers. This course does appear on your course schedule and is required for all Galveston Gateway students.

When will I sign up for Fall courses?

During an initial Learning Community session, you will be advised in and register for Fall courses. Successful students will take these classes during the Fall semester. Unsuccessful students will have these courses dropped from their Fall schedules.

Can I participate in activities outside of Galveston Gateway?

Yes. But keep in mind that successfully completing the program grants you full admission to TAMUG for the Fall semester. Galveston Gateway does not require your participation in SALT Camp, Texas Maritime Academy, or a campus tour. If you are interested in any of those, please contact those offices directly.
