Career-Oriented Summer Programs for High Ability Students in Grades 9-12

TAG, a summer program for high ability students in grades 9-12 is being offered this summer at Texas A&M University at Galveston. These career-oriented courses will help students expand their horizons with a preparatory course in the field of their choice. Early exposure to the career of their interest will enable them to make better course decisions in the future.

2008 Courses & Dates:

Veterinary Medicine: June 15-21

What do Veterinarians do? See large and small animal practices, laboratory animal medicine facilities, zoo medicine, animal welfare facilities and some actual surgery. You will talk with practicing veterinarians and explore the anatomy of the animal as well as learn the clinical applications. Isolate real parasites and see what cells are and what they do. Can you read radiographs to diagnose the lesion? You will after your Galveston Island experience!  ($900)

Marine Engineering: July 13-19

Marine Engineering was offered for the first time in 2007. TAG campers took a behind the scenes tour of the Texas Clipper III and the TAMUG Marine Engineering building. Other activities included: construction of downhill cars, construction of a trebuchet (see photo gallery below), field trip to NASA, field trip to an oil rig museum w/hands-on activities, and engineering class with college students. ($900)

.

Marine Biology Research: July 27 - August 2

Discover marine biology by exploring the diverse habitats of Galveston Island and the challenges to moving on a barrier island. Wade in the salt marshes of Galveston Bay and learn why this is our most valuable resource. Collect pelagic and benthic organisms aboard the research vessel R/V Milan and discuss their importance to the food web of Galveston Bay. Learn about endangered sea turtles and visit the sea turtle hatchery. Learn about marine mammals of the Gulf of Mexico and help conduct dolphin surveys. Using the vast resources of Galveston, we will integrate taxonomy, physiology, ecology and behavior of marine animals in their natural environment. This course is designed for students seeking a "hands on" approach to the marine environment as most activities are field oriented. Students will also design an original project to be presented at the end of the TAG session.  ($900)

Pre-Med: July 13-19 & July 27-August 2
MUST BE 16 YEARS OLD TO PARTICIPATE IN PRE-MED!

Texas A&M University at Galveston is now offering a pre-med summer program for high ability students. This week-long session is designed to enhance exposure to many different aspects of the health sciences. Students will begin with a tour of the UTMB (University of Texas Medical Branch)  campus to learn about the many different components comprising a major medical center. Each day they will explore aspects of different health and medical professions, giving them the ultimate pre-medicine experience. Students will learn tips about how to be successful in getting accepted to medical school as well as learn about the M.D./Ph.D. program. Because of the sensitive nature of several tours and activities (i.e. autopsy), hospital policy requires that campers be at least 16 years old to participate in this camp.

Pre-Med 2007 students participated in the following tours & activities:

UTMB School of Allied Health and Sciences
Baylor College of Medicine
DNA extraction
Intravenous and tracheotomy activity
MD Anderson
UTMB - Old Red, Gross Anatomy Lab, Shriners
Autopsy
Plastination

Tentative daily schedules for 2008 will be similar to 2007 tours and activities. Each camper will also receive a white lab coat. Proper professional attire required. Class size limited to 12.
($900)
