Take a peek of what "Adventures in
Marine Biology" has to offer. A day's activities might include touring a sea turtle head
start
facility. The program also includes trawling from the 42' Research Vessel
Earl L. Milan.
Other activities include exploring
a salt marsh where campers have the opportunity to see numerous species of
birds and fish, as well as shrimp and crabs. Sea Campers learn about the ecological
importance of the salt marsh while getting up close and personal to some really
slimy mud. Your white socks will never be the same again!!!
Campers also try their hands at
using a seine net along the beach to discover the life that thrives on the
shoreline. Studying oysters, campers experience a once in a lifetime opportunity to not only see a living oyster
reef, but to sample the delectable treats inside those shells (RAW!!) with
Dr. Sammy Ray. Sea
Campers also get the chance to learn about marine mammals from a representative
of the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network through a lecture and a hands-on
marine mammal biofact display.
Sea Campers will be able to
collect shells from Galveston's beaches to identify them by the different
shapes and details of each type of shell. Dissecting fish to discover all
there is to see, smell, and touch about their anatomy is the order of the Sea
Camper adventure. Campers put to use an age-old Asian tradition of fish
printing to make their own personalized souvenir t-shirts. The
importance of keeping our beaches and other areas clean is demonstrated through
a beach clean-up in which the amount of trash collected is tallied for the
campers to be proud of.
Throughout the entire week,
the campers will be working on group projects pertaining to some aspect of
Sea Camp. These projects will be presented at the closing ceremonies at the
end of the week. Aside from all of these unforgettable learning activities,
Sea Campers will also have tons of recreation and entertainment in store for
them. It's amazing that it all fits in one week!!
