2004 NA Women's Championships-Gerald C. Miller Trophy
(05.26.04 - 05.28.04) Cascade Locks, Oregon
REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:
Wednesday:
The morning began with gray skies and rain, with breeze from the west at 8-10 knots. Competitors started with practice on the Columbia River. After a brief skipper's meeting, racing started around noon with wind from the west at 8-10 knots, and rain. Courses sailed were windward-leeward twice around, olympics and gold cups.
Navy, Yale and Harvard started the event strong, all three vying for the top spot within 3 points after the first 2 races of the day. Navy and Yale pulled out ahead after the second rotation. By the end of the day, Navy had pulled ahead by 11 points, leaving Yale and ODU fighting for second and third.
Highlights: racers in 4B experienced a squall bringing rain and winds at 15-20 knots, which left 10 boats capsized. After all boats were righted, a brief break, and heavy crews in the boats, A division went back out for 2 races in 10-15 knot breeze and very light rain.
Sailing resumes tomorrow morning, with report time at 9:45 AM.
Thursday:
The day started with light rain and no wind, followed by more light rain and still no wind. Sailors stayed busy playing cards, Frisbee and constructing vehicles out of dollies and racing them down the hill. Sailing finally started with B division at 4:35. Conditions were raining and breeze was 5-10 knots from the west for the first race, with lighter wind for the second one. A division’s first race had light winds also from the west. A’s second race started with a general recall and then the wind picked up to 10-12 knots. B headed back out for 2 more races in similar conditions. B division sailed 4 races, A sailed 2, bringing both to a total of 8 races sailed in the event.
Standings are tight, with Yale taking the lead from Navy, but only leading by 8 points. The fleet is close with places 3-11 separated by only 28 points. Friday should be an exciting day of racing with just over half of the races left to sail. Racing resumes Friday, with report time at 9AM and racing starting at 9:45.
Friday:
After a late night of protest hearings, followed by an early morning of protest hearings, sailing started with A division on the water. After 2 races, Yale stretched their lead to nearly 20 points, followed by Navy, who led Hawaii by 21 points. With half of the races left to sail, there was plenty of time for a lead change. Positions 3-8 were only separated by 13 points, proving how close the competition for this event was.
B went back out for 1 race before the rain came back, and the wind stopped. Tufts grabbed the first place finish to push them closer to a top 3 finish, trailing Hawaii by a mere 7 points. Navy’s 15th place finish gave Yale a bit more breathing room, increasing the spread to 23 points.
B division’s second race of the day (10th overall) saw Yale placing 13th, giving Navy a jump back to within 13 points. Hawaii hung onto third with Tufts 2 points behind and Stanford 2 behind them, with Harvard 4 points behind that. Very close racing.
After two more A races in blue skies with rain, and wind from the west at 5-10 knots, Hawaii and Navy were tied for second, but only 10 points behind Yale in first place. Harvard and Sanford are tied for 4th and behind the next place by 13 points. B finished their 11th race, leaving Yale in first by 17, Hawaii in second place, and Navy only 3 points behind them. Wind was still from the west at 5-10 knots, with no rain. After B finished their next rotation, we saw a change in positions, as Navy slides back into the number 2 spot, ahead of Hawaii by 4 points. Dartmouth made up some ground by chalking up 2 first place finishes, leaving them in 7th, but only 10 points out of 3rd. 2 more races to go.
A division finished racing at 4:35. Yale clinched first place with 1 race left to go. Navy’s 13th place finish pushed them down to 5th overall, but only out of 2nd place by 3 points. A mere 6 points separate 2nd place from 6th place. All teams watched anxiously as B went out for their last race.
After all races were finished, Yale came out on top by 22 points. Harvard was in second and Navy finished third. Overall very close final results with places 5,6 and 7 within striking distance of 3rd. 26 races sailed in all.
