2004 ICSA/GILL NA Dinghy Championships
(06.02.04 - 06.04.04) Cascade Locks, OR
REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:
Friday:
Racing started around 10 AM, with B division on the water first.
B finished one race in light air before the wind died and they were forced to come in. After some time on the shore, they finished their set. The wind built throughout the day for perfect Gorge conditions of 18-24 knots from the west. In total, 10 races were sailed today to complete the full 36 races, 18 per division, with the last race finished by 5:00. There were several redresses filed along with a few protests.
Hawaii had no problem keeping their lead and finished 29 points ahead of second place Georgetown. Hobart William Smith Colleges finished third, but USC and Dartmouth were not far behind, making for an exciting day and finish.
Thursday:
Racing got underway at 11:00 AM to sunny skies and 8-12 knots of breeze from the west. After the first 2 races of the day, Hawaii took the lead over Dartmouth, and held on for the rest of the day.
Around 4:30 the breeze picked up to 18-24, providing the heavier crews a chance to get out on the water, and the lighter ones a chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
A division sailed 14 races, while B sailed 12. With only 10 races left to race tomorrow, Hawaii’s 34 point lead could prove difficult to overcome. Tomorrow should prove to be exciting with most teams separated by less than 20 points.
Report time tomorrow is 9AM with races starting at 9:45AM.
Wednesday:
After a skipper’s meeting and small morning practice, racing began around noon. Sailors were greeted this morning with sunny skies and no wind, but the breeze filled in just in time for some practice before starting the races.
After 4 races sailed in each division, standings were relatively tight with Dartmouth, Hawaii and Georgetown leading the pack. After an additional 2 races, the top spots stayed the same, with the top 3 pulling away a little bit.
After 6 races in each division, Dartmouth leads the regatta with 45 points, followed by Hawaii with 54 and Georgetown and St. Mary's tied, with 88.
Winds were consistent 8-12 from the west all day, with lighter current than the last week. Tomorrow should bring similar conditions. Report time tomorrow is 9AM with races starting at 9:45AM.
