Fire Extinguisher Types

Fire extinguishers use a variety of modes to extinguish a fire including water, Carbon Dioxide, Dry Chemical, Wet Chemical, and Halon just to name a few. Extinguishers are classified by the type of fire they are able to extinguish. Class A fires include solid combustibles such as paper, cloth, plastics and wood. Class B fires include flammable liquids such as grease, kerosene, and gasoline. Class C fires include energized electrical equipment. Class D fires are flammable metals such as Magnesium, and Sodium. The majority of the extinguishers on campus are ABC extinguishers and are capable of extinguishing most fires that could occur on campus. For fire extinguisher training, please contact the Safety office at (409) 740-4055.

Note: It is against University policy to tamper with or discharge a fire extinguisher in any manner not consistent with it's intended use.
