Frequently Asked
Questions
How do I apply to be a part of NROTC at
TAMUG?
Visit our Application page and print out the NROTC application PDF as
well as the medical history form DD 2807-2 PDF. Complete these forms,
obtain an official high school transcript (which should include SAT/ACT
scores) and mail those in addition to a one-page essay about your interest
in joining this program. Packet should be sent to:
Texas A&M University at Galveston
Department of Naval Science
P.O. Box 1675
Galveston, TX 77553
Is there a separate application for admission to
Texas A&M University at Galveston?
Yes. You will need to visit the
Prospective Student page
to learn further information about admissions requirements and general
application procedures.
Is the medical history form DD 2807-2 the
same as a physical?
No. This form is a medical screening form which is used to spot any
potentially disqualifying medical conditions or any other medical
condition that might warrant special attention. Your primary health care
provider must complete this form based on your medical history. If you
already have a completed DODMERB physical, we can accept that instead of
the DD 2807-2. Some medical conditions which can be potentially
disqualifying are:
-
vision not correctable to 20/20 in each
eye
-
substandard color vision
-
history of asthma
-
acute or chronic cardiac/pulmonary
conditions
-
chronic skin disorders (i.e. cystic acne,
eczema, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis)
-
arthritis
-
seizure disorders
-
susceptibility to severe motion sickness
-
alcohol or drug abuse
I mailed in my application packet. Now
what?
Once your packet is received, it will be reviewed and you will be
notified of our admissions decision.
When will I receive my scholarship?
You will receive your scholarship once classes begin after
indoctrination training, if and only if all of the following occur:
-
your Navy Officer Recruiter awarded you a
four-year NROTC scholarship,
-
you have been accepted to the NROTC unit
at Texas A&M University (you will transfer to the Texas A&M University
at Galveston NROTC unit from College Station without actually starting
classes at College Station)
-
AND you have been accepted to Texas
A&M University at Galveston.
What will make me a more competitive
candidate for a scholarship?
Students with A's in Calculus and Calculus based Physics will stand
out as competitive candidates. It is also presentable for a student to
maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average in a technical major or a 3.4
grade point average in a non-technical major.
What are the minimum requirements to be
accepted as an NROTC College Program Student?
-
Current college-level students need at
least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average and must have completed no
less than twelve credit hours.
-
High school students need a minimum SAT =
950 (530 Verbal, 520 Math) or ACT = 22 (22 Verbal, 22 Math)
How long can I participate in NROTC
without being on a contract or scholarship?
Students have until the beginning of their junior academic year to
either earn a scholarship or receive advanced standing status. If a
student fails to achieve either of these, that student will no longer be
able to participate in the NROTC program at TAMUG.
If a student fails to achieve the
afore-mentioned, will they be unable to use their NROTC training?
No. Students in this situation should contact their enlisted recruiter
for further information. Any times served in NROTC programs can count
favorably towards an enlisted service career. Time served in an NROTC
program can also help towards Officer Candidate School (OCS) selection.
Do you offer a Marine Corps Option at
Texas A&M University at Galveston NROTC?
No. Students interested in competing for the Marine Corps Option
Scholarship must do so at Texas A&M University, College Station. Students
enrolled in the Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Course program may
participate in the NROTC unit at Texas A&M University at Galveston on a
case by case basis but there is no possibility of a Marine Corps
Scholarship award at Texas A&M University at Galveston.
Is it possible to earn a merchant mariner
license and participate in NROTC at the same time?
Yes. Students interested in doing this must apply both to the Texas
A&M University at Galveston - Texas Maritime Academy and the NROTC
programs. Students pursuing the merchant mariner license must meet U.S.
Coast Guard requirements, which vary somewhat from U.S. Navy requirements.
Eligible candidates will be selected on a case by case basis.
I have been accepted to the NROTC
program. Now what?
You will receive an acceptance letter detailing the next step of your
acceptance process.
What military obligation will I incur?
You are not obligated to serve in the military until you are awarded
and accept a scholarship or advanced standing contract status. Contact us
to receive further information about military obligations with these
decisions.
I am interested in attending the U.S.
Naval Academy but was not admitted. Is it possible to transfer there from
TAMUG NROTC?
It is possible to transfer from TAMUG NROTC to the U.S. Naval Academy
or to an NROTC program elsewhere, but only on a strict case by case basis.
NOTE: Although a transfer is possible, it is important to
understand that it is neither guaranteed nor easy.
Does Texas A&M University at Galveston
