Mandatory Fall 2012 Census

Attention students: It is important to read this entire email for instructions on completing your Housing Census.

All current residents of campus housing (even those not planning on being at TAMUG next semester) MUST follow the link provided at the bottom of this e-mail and submit their information by November 16th. Failure to do so could result in your housing situation being changed. For most people, this form takes less than 2 minutes to complete. Please take care of it today if possible so it doesn't slip your mind.

This e-mail is your opportunity to provide us the information needed for your housing situation next semester (Spring 2013). For those students who are not planning on returning to campus, it informs the University so that you are not inappropriately billed. This information is very important and ALL campus residents must complete the form, so please do not fail to follow the attached link at the end of the form after reading these instructions.

PREFERENCES

The link located at the bottom of this e-mail directs students to update/provide information as to their plans for the next semester.  Although we have found the vast majority of students want to keep their rooming situation the same, there are also those who desire change.  This process informs TAMUG what your desire might be.  At this time, you need to make a decision.

These are your options:

1. You would like everything to stay the exactly same as it did in the Fall Semester - none of your roommates or suitemates are leaving and you would like the same room (or if a roommate or suitemate is leaving and you do not care who is put in their place).  Simply follow the link provided below and indicate that you would like things to remain the same.  After marking that choice and saving your changes, you are done.

2.One or more of your roommates or suitemates are moving out or you want to move to a different room.  First, follow the link provided below and complete all of your preferences.  Second, click on the link "New Room/Roommate Application" and print the form found at that link.  The form gives you two options - you can tell the Office of Residence Life your solution (i.e. my roommate is moving out and I want my friend Jane Doe to move into her place) or you can leave it up to Residence Life to find you a solution.  Please keep in mind, no system is perfect.  We will make every attempt to honor your requests.  Please be sure to indicate at a minimum who you would like to have as a roommate.  Failure to do so leaves Residence Life with the challenge of finding you a suitable roommate from the pool of current as well as incoming students.  As you know yourself and your preferences much better than we do, we would appreciate your assistance as much as possible.  Furthermore, if you know that your current roommate is not returning in the Fall, your best strategy is to find someone now who you can live with and indicate that person on your preference sheet.

3. You are leaving the university - Please follow the link provided below and complete the form.

SINGLE ROOM AVAILABILITY

The demand for single rooms is much higher than the availability.  We do not anticipate any singles to be open.  Instead students who desire changes in their room location as well as the number of new students that come in at Spring semester will be matched to find the highest compatibility with anyone who does not currently have a roommate.  If you currently have a single room or your roommate will be leaving at the semester and you do not submit a request for a roommate, there is a high probability that you will be matched with a complete stranger.  As a result, the university strongly recommends you find someone who you are comfortable rooming with, if you do not, there is a good chance you will be matched with a new student rather than another returning student.  All moves must be made before Winter Break as incoming transfers and freshmen will be moving straight into what openings we have.

Reminder: Students who currently do not have a roommate are by no means guaranteed a single room in the Spring.

MOVING OFF CAMPUS

All students who lived on campus for the Fall semester signed a housing contract for nine months.  Permission to break a housing contract is rarely granted.  Students should also remember that the University Apartments Galveston are considered off campus housing.  Students will not be able to honor leases with these facilities unless they have been granted permission to live off campus.

COLLEGE STATION BOUND

If you are hoping to change your curriculum to attend Texas A&M University at the College Station campus for the Spring semester, you are still required to complete the preference information.  When completing information, Residence Life recommends that you complete it in a manner as if you were not accepted to College Station.  If you are not accepted to College Station, do you plan to return to Galveston or go elsewhere?  Acceptance to College Station will certainly take precedence over this form, but by completing the form as recommended, students who are not accepted and plan to return to the Galveston campus will still have some input into their housing situation.

Students who have absolutely no doubt that they will be going to the College Station campus can simply mark that they will be leaving campus housing and indicating College Station as the university if they are not interested in this extra precaution.  Upon your acceptance to College Station, you will be dropped from TAMUG campus housing unless you notify us to do otherwise.  Most new students will not have completed the 27 hours required to initiate the process at this time.

We hope this information is helpful to you.  We are interested in gathering as much information from you in a timely manner so we can make your housing situation as satisfying as possible.  The Office of Residence Life is available to help answer your questions about this.  You may reach us at 409.740.4445.
