TIO Fellowship Opportunities


Texas Institute of Oceanography encourages scientific research in subject areas pertaining to the State of Texas by actively providing funding for research and undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral research fellowships.

Undergraduate Fellowship

Undergraduate students at Texas A&M University at Galveston are able to conduct their own research projects with support from a program sponsored by the Texas Institute of Oceanography (TIO).

Started in the Spring of 1998, the purpose of this program is to provide research experience for undergraduate students.  The competitively awarded fellowships are awarded each semester to juniors or non-graduating seniors who have submitted research proposals.  The University Research Advisory Council evaluates each proposal based on the scientific importance, originality, research plan and benefit to the student's education.  Successful recipients receive salary support to conduct the research. Students must present their results in a poster format at a TAMUG student Research Symposium.

Recipients are paid as a Student Technician ($8/hour) and receive a small travel stipend.  Project must be completed within two semesters and summer session I. Added funds for travel to present results at a scientific meeting may be requested from the Research Advisory Council.  Fellowship is non-renewable.

Applications are usually accepted only in September of each year.

To be eligible, student must:

  • be a Junior or Senior (GPA >3.0 overall at A&M)
  • be registered full-time
  • have a faculty sponsor for the proposed project
  • be available to work 10-15 hours/week on the project

Sponsor must agree to:

  • Provide instruction
  • Provide laboratory space (field work is also acceptable)
  • Provide supplies & equipment
  • Monitor hours worked and sign regular time sheets verifying those hours.

Application must be received by deadline, typewritten and include:

  1. Application Form
  2. Narrative (must not exceed 500 words, double spaced in 12 pt.) in the style appropriate to the scientific discipline
  • Title of Research
  • Description of Research (Include objectives and methodology)
  • Benefit to student's education

    3. Letter of support from faculty member

 

Applications are reviewed by the TAMUG Research Advisory Council, and the successful applicants are notified before the end of the preceding semester.

Postdoctoral Fellowships

Texas A&M University at Galveston

Texas A&M University at Galveston (TAMUG) seeks applications for two competitively awarded 2-year postdoctoral fellowships from highly qualified candidates interested in any aspect of marine biology, oceanography, coastal/ocean engineering, marine geology or marine policy and management.  Research focusing on Texas and the Gulf of Mexico will take priority. 

Located on Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, TAMUG has approximately 1600 undergraduates, 100 graduate students and 70 full-time faculty in 8 departments.  TAMUG is the coastal campus of Texas A&M University specializing in all aspects of the marine environment.  Research is supported by the Texas Institute of Oceanography and Center for Marine Life Sciences.  A list of laboratories at TAMUG may be found at http://www.tamug.edu/research/centers.htm.

Fellowships will provide partial salary support for 2 years and an annual stipend for computer, travel and miscellaneous expenses.  Salary support will be 85% for year 1 and 65% for year 2.  Each fellow must be sponsored by a TAMUG faculty member who may only support one applicant per year.  The sponsoring TAMUG faculty member must commit to fund the remainder of the salary.   Each fellow will receive a competitive compensation package. 

Applications should be recent Ph.Ds or degree candidates who must complete their degree prior to starting the fellowship.  To be eligible, applicants must have a designated TAMUG faculty member as a sponsor.  Applications must be received by February 1, 2008 and must include a completed employment application (available at http://www.tamug.edu/hrd/TAMUG%20App%20-%20Updated%20Version.pdf), curriculum vitae, brief description of applicant’s doctoral research, statement of research interests (multi-disciplinary projects are encouraged), and a letter of support from the TAMUG faculty member agreeing to serve as sponsor.  All required application materials must be received by deadline to be eligible.  In addition, 3 letters of recommendation should be sent directly to the address below and be received by February 1, 2008 to ensure full consideration.  Send application materials to Human Resources, Postdoc-07, Texas A&M University at Galveston, PO Box 1675, Galveston, TX 77553.  Send an email to rutkowsp@tamug.edu stating application has been submitted and indicate the method of delivery (eg. Fellowships will be announced March 2008 with an anticipated start date of September 1, 2008.  This is dependent upon legislative funding for FY09 and FY10.
