Texas A&M University at Galveston (TAMUG) seeks applications for a competitively awarded 18 month postdoctoral fellowship from highly qualified candidates interested in any aspect of marine biology, oceanography, coastal/ocean engineering, marine geology or marine policy and management. Research focusing on Texas and the Gulf of Mexico will take priority.
Located on Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, TAMUG has approximately 1600 undergraduates, 100 graduate students and 70 full-time faculty in 8 departments. TAMUG is the coastal campus of Texas A&M University specializing in all aspects of the marine environment. Research is supported by the Texas Institute of Oceanography and Center for Marine Life Sciences. A list of laboratories at TAMUG may be found at http://www.tamug.edu/research/centers.htm.
Fellowships will provide 100% salary support for 18 months and a small stipend for computer, travel and miscellaneous expenses. Each fellow must be sponsored by a TAMUG faculty member who may only support one applicant per year. Each fellow will receive a competitive compensation package.
Applications should be recent Ph.Ds or degree candidates who must complete their degree prior to starting the fellowship. To be eligible, applicants must have a designated TAMUG faculty member as a sponsor. Applications must be received by February 2, 2009 and must include a completed employment application (available at www.tamug.edu/hrd/employ.html), curriculum vitae, brief description of applicant’s doctoral research, statement of research interests (multi-disciplinary projects are encouraged), and a letter of support from the TAMUG faculty member agreeing to serve as sponsor. Review Criteria for TIO Post-doctoral Fellowship Applications
The TIO Post-doctoral Fellowship provides 18 months of salary support to a qualified applicant who intends to work with a faculty member at Texas A&M University at Galveston. Applicants must identify the research advisor for his/her fellowship and the advisor must submit a “letter of support” describing the research environment that he/she intends to provide the applicant. The applicant must provide a Statement of Research Interests (4 pages maximum) in which the goals of the applicant’s proposed post-doc are discussed. Selection will be based on the following criteria, with weights for the criteria determined by the reviewers.
Criteria for evaluation of the Statement of Research Interests:
1. Is the objective of the applicant clearly stated?
2. Is the background for the work explained with references and methods described?
3. Is the plan practical in terms of timing?
4. Will publications result from the research?
5. Are the opportunities for continued or increased funding
Criteria for evaluation of the Statement of Support from the faculty sponsor:
1. Is there appropriate laboratory space?
2. Does the research complement the existing research in the lab?
3. Is there support funding available from the PI beyond the TIO contribution for materials, supplies, and travel support?
Criteria for evaluation of the applicant’s past record
1. Excellent reference letters from qualified outside reviewers
2. Academic record including any previous post-doctoral experience
3. Applicant’s publication record
General criteria for evaluation:
1. Does the proposed work fit the mission of the Texas Institute of Oceanography?
2. Is the applicant likely to secure a future academic appointment as the result of the fellowship?
