Project:

My research interests revolve around the interface of environmental microbiology and chemistry, particularly on elucidating the complex interactions of microorganisms and petroleum hydrocarbons in terrestrial and marine environments. My recent work at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute has focused on unraveling the roles of bacteria and environmental factors such as temperature, sunlight, and nutrients on the fate of spilled oil in the northern Gulf of Mexico. As a postdoctoral fellow of the ADDOMEx consortium at TAMU-Galveston, I am particularly interested on how photooxidation and changes in oil chemistry affect the production of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) and formation of marine snow. I received my B.S. Biology from Mindanao State University in the Philippines and completed my M.S. and Ph.D. in Environmental Studies from Tohoku University in Japan.
