Parents play an important role in the decision making process of where a student will eventually go to college. Once that often difficult decision has been made, the continued support of a student's parents can often make the difference between a student succeeding and eventually graduating or not. As parents of our students, we welcome you to our "Aggie Family" and look forward to working closely together, parent, student, and University, toward "our" student's success in the classroom and in life.
Texas A&M University at Galveston offers educational programs for all ages. Sea Camps, Group Tours for school groups and professional continuing education all illustrate that the Ocean is our Classroom. From Outreach Programs that help educate and inform young children to Employment Opportunities for those seeking a new career, to continuing education for lifetime mariners and teachers, Texas A&M University at Galveston stands as a contributing partner to making the world a better place for the citizens of Galveston, the State of Texas, and beyond. We look forward to meeting you.
Texas A&M University at Galveston is the sea arm of Texas A&M. We are a small, special purpose university dedicated to research, service and education on our coasts, waterways and oceans. We are a community of 2,500 who share a passion to work and study amid an ocean environment. We are all about what is in, on or near the sea.
And if you think about it, that’s pretty important. Seventy percent of the earth’s surface is covered by water. Ninety percent of world trade is water borne. Eighty percent of the world’s populations live near the water. Sixty percent of the world’s food supply comes from the sea.
The Galveston/Houston region is home to more than 3,000 energy-related companies and the top oil and gas exploration and production firms in the nation. The Port of Houston is number 1 in the nation for foreign waterborne tonnage and number 2 in the nation for total tonnage. The area’s ports alone provide almost 1.5 million jobs.
This university is the home of the Texas Maritime Academy, the only one on the Gulf and one of only six state academies in the U.S. TMA graduates serve as officers in the Navy and Merchant Marine or as captains, engineers or leaders in the maritime industry.
Beside our high academic standards, you will find here a faculty and staff that really care. The safety and academic success of our students is our highest priority.
Our graduates are sought by some of the nation’s top companies with 95 percent of our students having well-paying jobs within 90 days of graduation. Our business graduates on average earn starting salaries of $47,000, Navy and Merchant Marine officers on average start at $65,000 and engineering graduates on average start at $70,000.
As a top tier university, we make it a priority to give back to the community through research and service. Our Gold LEED certified Ocean and Coastal Studies Building is home to 17 marine science centers and research laboratories. It houses the Texas Seafood Safety Laboratory and the Laboratory for Oceanographic and Environmental Research which provides facilities and support for research in ecological, environmental and biogeochemical studies. The Sea Life Center conducts research and rescues endangered species. The Center for Texas Beaches and Shores studies and protects our Texas shorelines, bays and waterways. The Texas Wetlands Ecology Laboratory researches and conserves ecosystems that spawn shrimp, oysters and other sea life.
You will also find the Aggie Spirit here. Ethos, excellence, integrity, leadership, loyalty, respect, and selfless service are all standards that you will carry with you for the rest of your life. As Aggies, we are not only known for our knowledge, skills and work ethic, but also for the characteristics established in our tradition of good judgment, leadership and service, above self.
