Texas A&M University at Galveston offers educational
outreach programs to people of all ages.
Sea Camp
is a week-long residential adventure
exploring the wonders of the marine and estuarine
environments for campers ages 10-18. As a Sea Camper you
will have access to research vessels, oceanographic
equipment, laboratory facilities, and a professional staff
enabling you to learn about the ocean through hands-on
experiences.
Sea Campus
Kids is a marine oriented day program for
campers ages 6-11. Campers will have their hands-on and
feet-in as they wade through a salt marsh, visit a turtle
hatchery, dissect a fish or seine in the surf.
Talented &
Gifted is a residential summer program
for high ability students in grades 8-12. These
career-oriented courses will help students expand their
horizons with a preparatory course in the field of their
choice.
Elderhostel
is America’s first and the world’s
largest educational travel organization for adults 55 and
over. Elderhostel at Texas A&M University at Galveston is
just one of many possible learning adventures offering
fascinating topics, interesting & knowledgeable instructors,
local experts, and hands-on opportunities. TAMUG offers
additional outreach programs such as field trips, teacher
workshops, and Adventures in Science (an after school
program for local students).
Continuing Professional Development
The Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX), in partnership with Texas A&M University
at Galveston, operates the
Center for Marine Training and Safety (CMTS).
The Center offers environmental protection courses
through the TEEX Oil Spill Control School (established
in 1975) and professional marine/maritime courses
through the TEEX Marine Safety Program. The Center
helps to facilitate the continuing education mission of
Texas A&M University at Galveston. Texas Maritime
Academy Instructors, as well as instructors currently
working in the marine/maritime industry, provide adjunct
instructional assistance for the Center.
The TEEX Center for Marine
Training & Safety was specifically set up to
provide the Gulf of Mexico regional maritime and marine
industries (oceangoing, inland and coastal zones) with
professional job-skill related safety and training
programs designed and conducted for the adult learner,
as well as extension services and technical assistance.
Training is currently provided to all maritime
industries, including inland towing companies, offshore
oil and gas exploration, drilling companies, deep sea
shipping companies, and marine transportation related
facilities. Average class size is 15 participants for
open enrollment classes. Courses vary from one day to 2
weeks. Topics range from STCW courses, sea survival,
rig safety, spill response (management and operational
levels), hazardous material handling, to deck skills,
engineering skills, dock operator, tankerman, bridge
management, confined space and emergency operations.
Many courses may be modified to meet specific learning
objectives, as well as presented at the client’s desired
location.
