United States Coast Guard Honors Two Heroes of S/V Cynthia Woods Capsizing

July 27, 2009

The United States Coast Guard honored Roger Stone and Steve Conway with awards for heroism and valor for their actions following the capsizing of the sailing vessel Cynthia Woods in June 2008 at a ceremony on the Mitchell Campus of Texas A&M University at Galveston on July 27, 2009.

Linda Stone, Roger Stone's widow, accepted the Gold Lifesaving Award on his behalf.  The Gold Lifesaving Medal is awarded only to military personnel or U.S. citizens who rescue others from perils at sea at a risk to their own life. Since its authorization by Congress in 1874, the Gold Lifesaving Medal has been awarded to fewer than 700 people.

Eric and Elizabeth Stone read a poem at the ceremony to honor their father.

Steve Conway received a Certificate of Valor. The Certificate of Valor is awarded to those who exhibit courage in saving a life or attempting to save a life at extreme risk.
