
Dr. Bill Seitz named Regents Professor
The
Board of Regents of the Texas A&M University System awarded
the prestigious Regents Professor award to Dr. Bill Seitz on
Thursday, January 26, 2006 at the Board of Regents regular
meeting.
The award
was established in 1996 to recognize and honor faculty
members who have made exemplary contributions to their
University, agency, and to the people of the State of Texas.
The Regents Professor Award is given to only 12 faculty
members within the Texas A&M University System including
nine universities, seven state agencies and a comprehensive
health science center.
Dr. Seitz
joined the faculty of Texas A&M University at Galveston
(TAMUG) in 1977. He has been very involved in helping TAMUG
establish its first graduate program, master in marine
resources management and an undergraduate program in ocean
and coastal resources. He also assisted in establishing
TAMUG’s continuing education program and the nationally
ranked sailing team. Under his leadership, TAMUG took over
the entire maritime training program of the National
Maritime Union. The program has evolved to become the Center
for Marine Training and Safety operating by the Texas
Engineering Extension Service. In 1996, Seitz took a faculty
development leave to help establish the Heinz Center for
Science Economics and the Environment, and environmentally
based think tank in Washington, D.C.
Most
importantly to the State of Texas, Dr. Seitz has worked with
community leaders to create a large statewide effort through
the Texas General Land Office to study and combat beach
erosion.
Dr. Seitz
has published 85 peer-reviewed articles including one of the
most cited articles in chemistry.
In
addition to the recognition this award, Dr. Seitz will
receive a stipend of $3,000 per year for three years, he is
designated a “Regents Professor” for the duration of his
tenure, he is given a special medallion bearing the seal of
the Texas A&M University System to wear with his academic
regalia, and a commemorative framed certificate.
