The
cruise is part of the curriculum for every TMA cadet.
During their sophomore year, cadets
are introduced to terrestrial navigation, watchstanding and
VHF communication. These cadets are
required to complete a terrestrial navigation project, an
engine room watch and a VHF radio project.
The
typical junior cruise takes place on a commercial vessel.
While at sea junior cadets are
expected to complete a lengthy sea project that combines
celestial navigation, naval architecture, and cargo
operations.
On
a cadet's senior cruise they are thrust into a role similar to
that of a ship's mate. With the guidance of the officers
the senior cadets run the bridge
watch. Seniors are also responsible for passing a celestial
navigation project and mastering seven words per minute at
blinker light.
