Counseling Staff Addresses Statewide Secondary School Counselor Conference

The TAMUG Counseling Staff made two presentations Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at the Texas Secondary School Counselor Conference at the Galveston Island Convention Center.

Dr. Bob Sindylek, director of counseling service; Ken Bailey, director of career planning and placement; and Dr. Linda Colbert, former assistant director of counseling; addressed a standing room only crowd for their "QPR Gatekeeper Suicide Prevention Training."

QPR, stands for Question, Persuade and Refer. Much like CPR is a method to respond to cardiac arrest, QPR is a method of training lay people to recognize signs of suicidal ideation, and techniques to be used when addressing someone in crisis who show signs suicidal ideation.  Over 45 secondary school counselors were certified as QPR Gatekeepers.

Later that day, the trio presented "Teaching Healthy Relationship Behaviors to Adolescents" which was inspired by a successful joint outreach to TAMUG students by the Counseling Office and the Kinesiology faculty on our campus.

All in all nearly 100 secondary school counselors from all over the state attended these programs.
