McClendon Appointed Executive Associate Vice President and Chief Operating Officer

Dr. Rodney P. McClendon, currently chief of staff for the president of Texas A&M University, has been named executive associate vice president and chief operating officer for Texas A&M University at Galveston.

His appointment was announced Thursday, December 13, 2007 by Dr. R. Bowen Loftin, Texas A&M vice president and chief executive officer for the Galveston campus. “Dr. McClendon’s credentials, combined with his active leadership in recruiting and retaining faculty, staff and students of diverse backgrounds, make him the ideal person for this important position at TAMUG,” Loftin said, noting the appointment is effective March 1, 2008.

In his present position, which he has held since 2002, McClendon provides advice and insight on various issues involving the Office of the President, including policies, practices, historical background, potential legal implications and constituent interests.

He also has extensive experience in student affairs and academic affairs. Prior to joining Texas A&M as coordinator of student retention and development for the Department of Multicultural Services in 1995, he worked as a residence hall director at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.

After a year in the dual role of coordinator of student retention and development and interim assistant director of the Department of Multicultural Services, McClendon was appointed assistant provost, a post in which he advised the chief academic officer and served as the campus ethics officer.

In addition to his current chief-of-staff position for the 46,000-student university based in College Station, McClendon holds an appointment as an adjunct assistant professor in the College of Education and Human Resource Development.

McClendon earned his Ph.D. in leadership, education and communications at Texas A&M earlier this year. He earned a bachelor of business administration degree with a concentration in banking and finance in 1990 from Morehouse College and then earned a doctor of jurisprudence degree from the Emory University School of Law in 1994.

In this role, Dr. McClendon will serve as the second-in-command; have overall responsibility for the Division of Student Affairs and the Division of Administration (14 different departments reporting through two Assistant Vice Presidents); and continue to build strategic relationships between the Texas A&M branch campus in Galveston and the main A&M campus in College Station.
