Student Leaders Recognized for Service
Scholarships Awarded
Galveston, Texas – Texas A&M University at Galveston
honored student leaders with an awards banquet. The leadership awards were
established as a way to recognize the officers and outstanding leaders in campus
student organizations. These awards commend the students for the hours of hard
work they give to the university and the impact they make on campus life.
Student
Organization Awards
The Best Community Service Project was awarded to Circle K
for the Teddy Bear Drive. The Best Fundraiser was presented to Aggie SOUL for
the Halloween Masquerade. The Best Event was presented to BUILD for Cinderfella.
The Best Website was presented to the Dive Club.
In addition the new Student Government Officers were sworn in; qualifying
Crew team members were presented with their varsity letters; and the Resident
Advisors, Student Ambassadors, and Peer Mentors received certificates of
appreciation for their service.
Vanessa Miller was awarded the Officer of the Year. The nominees were
Johanna Guio with the Fine Arts
Association, Tommy Fajardo with Circle K, Kyleen
Policy with Circle K, David Graves with Texas Academy of Science, and Vanessa
Miller with Checkin’ Crew.
The
Texas Academy of Science recognized two students for their outstanding
contributions
– Meredith Wilson and David Jones.
The Drill Team honored Steven Meer for his hard work, dedication, and
spirit.
Buck Weirus Spirit
Award
The Buck Weirus Spirit Award honors 55 Texas A&M University students who
demonstrate high involvement, create positive experiences throughout the Aggie
community, impact student life at Texas A&M and enhance the Aggie Spirit. Unlike
other awards, the Buck Weirus Spirit Award recognizes those students who make
contributions to the university by participation in student organizations, Aggie
traditions and university events.
The award is named for Richard "Buck" Weirus '42, who served as executive
director of The Association of Former Students from 1964 to 1980 and personally
awarded each award until his death in 1997. During his tenure as director, The
Association of Former Students grew to become the premier alumni organization in
the world.
This year David Breuggen, Ty Reasonover, Katie St. Clair, Ryan McCreary,
and Jonathan Le of Texas A&M University at Galveston were selected by the
Association of Former Students as five of the 55 recipients of this award.
Krewe
Of Thalasar Award
The Krewe of Thalasar was created by several former
students of Texas A&M University at Galveston. It was the intention of the
Thalasar organizers to establish a krewe for the young, upwardly mobile marine
enthusiasts to join. To this end, The Krewe annually awards two current students
with honorary memberships to the Krewe of Thalasar. This year’s recipients are
Hannah DeSmedt and Mike Babineaux.
Alexander
Heldring Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship in memory of Alexander Heldring,
TAMUG class of 1987, reflects his love of the sea, his
dedication to his friends, and his persistence to succeed. The 2007 Recipient is
John Bell. Mr. Bell will received a $1000 scholarship and a certificate.
Sharon
Marie Bell Memorial Scholarship
The Family and friends of Sharon
Marie Bell, a Marine Biology student, have established a scholarship to
assist students who will continue to pursue her goals and dreams.
Sharon’s love of life, family, friends, animals, nature, as well as her God and
Country, shall be honored through the scholarships awarded. The 2007 recipient
is Megan Sikes. Ms. Sikes received a $1,000 scholarship and her name will be
placed on the plaque displayed in the Office of Student Life.
Henry Jacob
Jones Memorial Scholarship
Mr. and Mrs. Don Jones presented David Little with the
scholarship honoring their late son Henry Jacob Jones.
James R.
Young Memorial Scholarship
James Young was a very special friend to the students of this
Texas A&M University at Galveston. He spent 10 years in service to the students
as a financial aid officer. During that time he assisted thousands of students,
not only with their college finances, but also as a counselor, a mentor, and a
role model.
Mr. Young’s family, friends and the students of Texas A&M University at
Galveston, have established an endowment in his honor. Revenue from the
endowment generates the annual scholarship of $500. The 2007 recipient is
Darrell Farr. Mr. Farr will receive a $500 scholarship and certificate.
Robert Troy
Swetnam Memorial
Mr. and Mrs. Monte Swetnam presented the Robert Troy Swetnam Memorial
Scholarship to Shaya Seward. Ms. Seward will receive a $3000 scholarship and her
name will be placed on a plaque in the Office of Student Life.
William
Paul Ricker Memorial Leadership Scholarship
William Paul Ricker Memorial Leadership Scholarship is awarded on the basis of
leadership characteristics with the appropriate attention to academic standing
and general character. Bill Hearn, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs
and Administration, presented the award to Katie St. Clair. Ms. St. Clair
received a $2400 Scholarship and certificate.
Additional William Paul Ricker Memorial Scholarships were awarded to high
ranking academic students who have demonstrated leadership and service to Texas
A&M University at Galveston. This year 76 students received $1600 scholarship
and certificates. The 2007 recipients were: Lisa Arneson, Gabriel Ashworth,
