Rowe to Serve as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Chief Academic Officer

Dr. Gilbert Rowe will take the role of Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Chief Academic Officer for Texas A&M University at Galveston effective February 1, 2008.

Dr. Rowe, a Regents Professor, has served as the as the department head for Marine Biology at Texas A&M University at Galveston since 2003.  His research focuses on the ecology of organisms that live on the seafloor, cycling of organic carbon and nitrogen, coupling between processes on the sea floor and plankton, and mathematical simulations of deep-ocean food webs.  In addition to his administrative and research work, Dr. Rowe teaches Fisheries Population Dynamics.  

He earned a bachelors of Science degree from Texas A&M University in Zoology, a masters of Science degree from Texas A&M University in Oceanography, and a doctorate from Duke University in Zoology.

Prior to coming to Texas A&M University at Galveston, Dr. Rowe was an Oceanography professor at Texas A&M University in College Station for fifteen years.  Five of those years he was the head of the Oceanography Department.

Dr. William Merrell, who chaired the search committee said, “After a national search we selected three strong finalists for the position.  We are delighted that Dr. Rowe has accepted this challenge.”
