NROTC Commissioning
Galveston, Texas –
Texas A&M University at
Galveston student Matthew Dykes was commissioned
as an Ensign in the United States Navy on Friday at a ceremony
in the Moody Mansion.
About Ensign
Matthew Dykes
Ensign Dykes is from The Woodlands, Texas. He enlisted in the
Navy in September 1999 reporting to RTC Great Lakes, Illinois
for recruit training. Following graduation from boot camp, he
was assigned to
NavSubScol Groton,
Connecticut for Basic Enlisted Submarine School and Sonar
Technician “A” school. His next assignment was the fast
attack submarine, USS Miami (SSN-775), in Groton where he
served as the Hydrophone and Transducer system expert. After
earning his dolphins, Ensign Dykes served as a Sonar Division
LPO, Oceanography and Meteorology Officer, and MWR president.
In March 2004,
he was selected for the Seaman to Admiral-21 officer ascension
program. Prior to his
transfer to Texas A&M University at Galveston, he served
onboard the Nuclear Aircraft Carrier USS Enterprise (CVN-65)
as the USW liaison during operations in the North Atlantic.
While
attending Texas A&M at Galveston, Ensign Dykes served as the
NROTC Unit’s Company Commanding Officer, Division Officer, and
was the company Physical Training Officer. Upon graduation,
he will receive a Bachelor of Science in Maritime
Administration with high honors.
Following
commissioning Ensign Dykes will report to Nuclear Power School
NPTC Charleston, SC; for training as a Nuclear Trained
Submarine Officer.
Ensign Dykes’
awards include the Naval Achievement Medal (one award), Good
Conduct Medal
(two awards), National Defense Service Medal (one award), and
several other personal and unit citations.
