Texas A&M University at Galveston Presents Awards

       Galveston, Texas – Texas A&M University at Galveston presented a number of awards to students, faculty and staff during Commencement Exercises on Saturday. 

      The Board of Visitors Distinguished Student Awards were presented to the student in each class who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in classroom and laboratory work, as well as in student activities.  They are truly the top all around student’s in each class.  The recipients of the 2007 Board of Visitors Distinguished Student Awards are: Freshman - Cristella P. Torres, Marine Biology; Sophomore - Jonathan Q. Le, Marine Biology; Junior - Glenn T. Russell, Marine Sciences; and Senior - Brent A. Newton, Maritime Administration.

      The Edwin Eikel Award is the most prestigious award presented by Texas A&M University at Galveston.  The Edwin Eikel Outstanding Student Award has been presented to a graduating senior since 1978.  In addition to a beautiful plaque for the recipient and a listing on the university’s perpetual plaque, the recipient receives a $2500 check from the Edwin Eikel endowment.  Robert Eikel, grandson of Mr. & Mrs. Edwin Eikel to presented the Edwin Eikel Outstanding Student Award to Amy Luna.

      The William Paul Ricker Distinguished Faculty/Staff Achievement Awards are given to the Faculty and to the Staff members who have distinguished themselves by outstanding achievement in teaching, research, student relationships, and/or administration.  The award recipients receive a plaque, a watch and a $2000 check.

      2007 William Paul Ricker Distinguished Faculty award went to Captain Karl Fanning.  Many wonderful things have been said about Captain Fanning by colleagues and students alike. He has been described as passionate, caring, knowledgeable, effective, and dedicated. Of Captain Fanning, one student said, “He is a very special kind of teacher. He goes well beyond just teaching the material. He cares about the individual student and their future. He gives us the tools and knowledge we need to succeed in the real world.”

      Captain Fanning consistently makes extraordinary contributions to the quality, vitality and integrity of the academic programs in the departments of Marine Transportation and Maritime Administration. In addition to his role of teacher, Captain Fanning serves as advisor to the Propeller Club, serves as the TAMUG partner and representative to the Maritime Administration and Department of Transportation effort to develop programs and curricula regarding maritime security matters in ports, and acts as the faculty lead to the Bush School for graduate curricula in Maritime Administration and Maritime Transportation.

      The William Ricker Staff Award was presented to Mr. Ken Bailey. This year’s recipient is noted for commitment, dedication, and a willingness to take on new challenges. One colleague said, “Countless times I have personally seen Ken step up and lend a helping hand or push aside his personal agenda to assist others. It has been a privilege to work side by side with such a generous and respectful man.”

      Mr. Ken Bailey is the Director of Career Planning and Placement.  In that role he has expanded the employment outreach providing students with greater opportunities for employment while pursuing their degrees and after graduation. In addition to his serving as career counselor, he has taken on a variety of other roles, from serving as the Interim Director of Dining Services to the Crew Team Faculty Advisor, Mr. Bailey consistently demonstrates willingness to help and his ability to bring out the best in people.
