Cadets Depart for Summer Cruise

One-hundred and thirty-five cadets and four faculty members from the Texas Maritime Academy (TMA) at Texas A&M University at Galveston departed for summer cruise Tuesday.

The first group departed the campus via bus in the pre-dawn hours.  The second group left at 10:30 a.m.  Both were bound for the airport to for flights to Los Angeles where they will join the California Maritime USTS Golden Bear.

After a few days training in Los Angeles, the ship will head to sea on July 5.  This year's cruise will take them from Los Angeles to Catalina; Balboa, Panama; Valparaiso, Chile; Guayaquil, Ecuador; and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico before returning to Vallejo, California.

The cruise is part of the curriculum for every TMA cadet.  During their sophomore year, cadets are introduced to terrestrial navigation, watch standing and VHF communication aboard the training vessel. Cadets are required to complete a terrestrial navigation project, an engine room watch and a VHF radio project.

The typical junior cruise takes place on a commercial vessel. While at sea junior cadets are expected to complete a lengthy sea project that combines celestial navigation, naval architecture, and cargo operations.

On a cadet's senior cruise they return to the training vessel and are thrust into a role similar to that of a ship's mate or third assistant engineer. With the guidance of the officers the senior cadets run the bridge watch. Seniors are also responsible for passing a celestial navigation project and mastering seven words per minute at blinker light.

You may follow the voyage and the activities of the cadets here.
