Texas A&M University at Galveston NROTC presented awards to eighteen students on Friday, April 11, 2008.

Cadet Gabriel Ashworth received the General Society of the War of 1812 Award which is presented to the student who has encouraged and demonstrated the ideals of Americanism by deed or conduct or both.

Midshipman Andrew Rodriguez received the Military Order of the Purple Heart Award which recognizes an outstanding cadet who is enrolled in the NROTC program and demonstrates leadership ability. Each eligible cadet must have a positive attitude toward NROTC and country; hold a leadership position in the Corps of Cadets; be active in school and community affairs; attain a grade of “B” or better in all subjects for the previous semester; and not be a previous recipient of this award.

Midshipman Michael Ratzel (not pictured) received the Military Officers Association of America award which is presented to a NROTC cadet who has demonstrated academic excellence; high moral character; loyalty to the unit, school, and country; and exceptional potential for military leadership.

Cadets Collin Duke, Brendan Hayes-Morrison, and Ben Riddick received the Military Order of the World Wars Bronze Award for diligence, demonstrated military excellence, and outstanding accomplishments during the year.

Midshipman Michael Moon received the National Sojourners Award which is presented to an outstanding cadet who has demonstrated and encouraged the ideals of Americanism within the unit.

Mr. Douglas McBee presented Cadet Shaun Quinn the Sons of the American Revolution Award. Cadet Quinn has provided the unit with dignity and integrity. His hard work and dedication to duty are qualities that set him apart from his peers.

Mrs. Mary Gulley from the Daughters of the American Revolution presented an award for Midshipman Samantha Cibelli (not pictured). Midshipman Cibelli was selected for her desire to lead, her passion for her future career as a professional sailor, and the example she sets for others to follow. Midshipman Danielle Lawson accepted on her behalf.

A scholarship endowment has been made by Jim and Betty Sterling that honors a sophomore in the Merchant Marine Reserves or NROTC program with a strong potential for leadership in the Corps of Cadets and as an officer in the Naval Reserve. This year’s recipient is Cadet Robert Adams. Cadet Adams will receive a $500 scholarship and his name will be placed a permanent plaque in NROTC office.

Commander of the American Legion Post #47, Mr. Louis Lerma and Ms. Beverly Petersen, presented two medals from the American legion based on grades and overall academic superiority. Both of the individuals honored with this award have well above average GPAs. The recipients of the American Legion Scholastic Excellence Medals are Cadet Rachel Willoughby and Midshipman Shannon Peters.

Mr. Lerma also presented two medals to cadets who have provided the motivation and drive to execute many duties, most of which were beyond their individual responsibilities. The General Military Excellence Medals from the American Legion went to Cadet Robert Adams and Cadet Joseph Sebes, who personify the spirit of the unit.

Midshipman Shannon Peters received the Military Order of the World Wars Silver Award. This award is presented for diligence, demonstrated military excellence, and outstanding accomplishments during the year.

The USAA Spirit Award has been given here for ten years. It is given to the midshipman who best exemplifies the concept of service to unit, community, and nation. Midshipman Steven Mirrer (pictured with Lt. David Daigle) was selected for his drive and dedication. He received a clock from USAA and his name will be posted on a perpetual plaque in the NROTC office.

LCOL (USMC) Joseph M. Coman from the Houston Area Retired Officers Association presented an award to Cadet Carl Brynestad. The award recognizes Cadet Brynestad’s work and leadership. He has earned his merchant shipping license earlier than his peers. Upon graduation he will be commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

Midshipman Benjamin Massengale (not pictured) received the Military Order of the World Wars Gold Award for diligence, demonstrated military excellence, and outstanding accomplishments during the year. Midshipman Danielle Lawson accepted the award on his behalf.

Mr. Robert Rodriguez and Mr. Raul Rodriguez from the Galveston chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars presented the award for superior leadership. Midshipman Danielle Lawson accepted the award on behalf of Midshipman Benjamin Massengale (not pictured).

Capt. Swede Anderson presented the award from the Texas Navy for the Top Grade Point Average. Midshipman Austin Thompson  received the award. Midshipman Thompson was noted for putting forth 100% effort to maintain the highest non-freshmen GPA within the unit. This accomplishment is particularly noteworthy given that his major, Marine Systems Engineering, is arguably one of the most challenging majors on campus.

Capt. Anderson presented the Texas Navy Leadership Award. For the second year in a row, Midshipman Danielle Lawson (pictured in the banner at the top of the page) received the award as testament to her ability to lead by example. Lt. Wesley Weibel noted that Midshipman Lawson has been Company Commanding Officer for the last year. Her leadership has been evident by the success of the unit under her command.

Commander Brian Klock of the Greater Houston Council Navy League of the United States presented Midshipman Danielle Lawson with a Navy Officer’s Sword. The sword honors her accomplishments and selection as the most Outstanding Officer midshipman for the year. The sword represents strength and honor.
