Texas A&M University at Galveston honored student leaders with an awards banquet. The leadership awards were established as a way to recognize the officers and outstanding leaders in campus student organizations. These awards commend the students for the hours of hard work they give to the university and the impact they make on campus life. Buck Weirus Spirit Award The Buck Weirus Spirit Award honors 55 Texas A&M University students who demonstrate high involvement, create positive experiences throughout the Aggie community, impact student life at Texas A&M and enhance the Aggie Spirit. Unlike other awards, the Buck Weirus Spirit Award recognizes those students who make contributions to the university by participation in student organizations, Aggie traditions and university events. The award is named for Richard "Buck" Weirus '42, who served as executive director of The Association of Former Students from 1964 to 1980 and personally awarded each award until his death in 1997. During his tenure as director, The Association of Former Students grew to become the premier alumni organization in the world. This year Will Thomas Palmer, Mike Spiers, Erica Freno, Shae Krause, Ruthie Williams and Chris Katerinakis of Texas A&M University at Galveston were selected by the Association of Former Students as six of the 55 recipients of this award. William Paul Ricker Memorial Leadership Scholarships William Paul Ricker Memorial Leadership Scholarship is awarded on the basis of leadership characteristics with the appropriate attention to academic standing and general character. Dr. R. Bowen Loftin, TAMUG Vice President and CEO, presented the award to Shae Krause. Ms. Krause received a $2400 Scholarship and certificate. Additional William Paul Ricker Memorial Scholarships were awarded to high ranking academic students who have demonstrated leadership and service to Texas A&M University at Galveston. This year 51 students received $1600 scholarship and certificates. The 2008 recipients were: Troy Baker, Colleen Bowman, Betsy Bremer, Melanie Britton, Jonathan Bush, Lawrence Buskirk, Andrew Shane Cantrell, Krysta Chacon-Hulce, Rebecca Clay, Kelli Crisp, Marc Cutaia, Zach Davis, Reggie Desormeaux, Jessi Doerpinghaus, Blaine Donner, Jennifer Elliot, Kelli Forde, Kayleen Foster, Erica Freno, Kaylyn Germ, Joshua Gladman, Johanna Guio, Samuel Hafele, Brian Herbert, Ryan Hicks, Kyle Johnson, Calvin Kalu, Chris Katerinakis, Sean Kelly, Courtney Klepac, Guy Lagarde, Ben Massengale, Drew McKinney, Luke Murphy, Lourdes Ocasio-Russe, Kathryn Perry, Adam Plauche, Kyleen Policy, Amy Reeves, Amy Reierson, Kortney Rivera, Stephanie Rodgerson, Mikeline Schmidt, Colt Snapp, Michael Spiers, Joshua Stover, Ricki Tucker, Matthew Walker, Samuel Waltman, Ben Watson and Lizabeth Wood. Sharon Marie Bell Memorial Scholarship The Family and friends of Sharon Marie Bell, a Marine Biology student, have established a scholarship to assist students who will continue to pursue her goals and dreams. Sharon’s love of life, family, friends, animals, nature, as well as her God and Country, shall be honored through the scholarships awarded. The 2007 recipient is Kaylyn Germ. Ms. Germ received a $1,000 scholarship and her name will be placed on the plaque displayed in the Office of Student Life. Henry Jacob Jones Memorial Scholarship Mr. and Mrs. Don Jones presented David Little with the scholarship honoring their late son Henry Jacob Jones. James R. Young Memorial Scholarship James Young was a very special friend to the students of this Texas A&M University at Galveston. He spent 10 years in service to the students as a financial aid officer. During that time he assisted thousands of students, not only with their college finances, but also as a counselor, a mentor, and a role model. Mr. Young’s family, friends and the students of Texas A&M University at Galveston, have established an endowment in his honor. Revenue from the endowment generates the annual scholarship of $500. The 2007 recipient is John Shearer. Mr. Shearer will receive a $500 scholarship and certificate. Robert Troy Swetnam Memorial Mr. and Mrs. Monte Swetnam presented the Robert Troy Swetnam Memorial Scholarship to Laura White. Ms. White will receive a $3000 scholarship and her name will be placed on a plaque in the Office of Student Life. Krewe Of Thalasar Award The Krewe of Thalasar was created by several former students of Texas A&M University at Galveston. It was the intention of the Thalasar organizers to establish a krewe for the young, upwardly mobile marine enthusiasts to join. To this end, The Krewe annually awards two current students with honorary memberships to the Krewe of Thalasar. This year’s recipients are Sam Waltman and Zach Davis. Student Organization Awards The Best Community Service Project was awarded to the Fine Arts Society for the their work with St. Vincent’s House. The Best Fundraiser was presented to B.U.I.L.D. for the Casino Night. The Best Event was presented to TAMUG S.E.E.D for their February Diversity Awareness Series. The Best Website was presented to the Surf Club. In addition, Mike Spiers and Shae Krause were sworn in as the new Student Government Officers; Zach Davis from the Crew team members was presented with varsity letters; and the Community Leaders, Student Ambassadors, and Peer Mentors received certificates of appreciation for their service. Community Leaders recognized were: Shana Marcon, Betsy Bremer, Sam Hafele, Ricki Tucker, Kyle Johnson, William Quillen, John Phillips, Guy Lagarde, Robert Hokanson, Krysta Chacon-Hulce, Steven Mirrer, Colin Crawford, Ben Strack, Blair Brownlow and Danielle Lawson. Student Ambassadors recognized were: Kyleen Policy, Jennifer Merkel, Alice Craig, Colt Snapp, Jessica Broussard, Shae Krause, Jo-Nathan Timmons, Megan Rogles, Nelly Elder and Chris Katerinakas. Peer Mentors recognized were: Jonathan Le, Sarah Moss, Kevin Chin, Calvin Kalu, Nicole Hinton, Natalie Hall, Ryan Brown, Alice Craig, Jessica Broussard and Nelly Elder. Johanna Guio and Kortney Rivera were each awarded Officer of the Year. The nominees were Johanna Guio with the Fine Arts Association, Kelli Forde with TAMUG S.E.E.D., Kortney Rivera with B.U.I.L.D. and Lauren Worthy with the Fine Arts Association. Cassandra Boyd was recognized as Advisor of the Year for her help with B.U.I.L.D. and TAMUG S.E.E.D. Cassandra joined the TAMUG staff last fall.
