The Texas Maritime Academy Corps of Cadets Awards Scholarships

The Texas Maritime Academy at Texas A&M University at Galveston presented scholarship awards to twenty-four cadets during a ceremony on April 17, 2008. Cadets were awarded scholarships based on curricula, personal achievements, positions within the Corps of Cadets and academic standing.

Cadets Jerron Broussard and Ben Watson received the J.C. "Bubb" Rudd Memorial Scholarship, presented by Buddie Hicks on behalf of the Port of Sabine Propeller Club. The scholarship, worth $1,000 for each cadet, was named in honor of Mr. "Bubb" Rudd. Rudd was one of the founding fathers of the Texas Maritime Academy. The scholarship recognizes license option students from Southeast Texas.

Cadets Michael Erskine and Ben Watson received the Women's Maritime Club Scholarship and the Polly McCarthy Memorial Scholarship, respectively. Both $1,000 awards were given by the Women's Maritime Club - Sabine District and were presented by Dr. Barbara Batty.

Cadet Kevin McDonald received the Captain Mark Hicks Memorial Scholarship. The $300 scholarship was funded by the Propeller Club of Freeport. It is awarded to an individual who plans to pursue a seagoing career in the maritime field with preference given to residents of Brazoria County.

Cadet Richard Campise received a $500 scholarship from the Marine Engineer's Beneficial Association (MEBA). He was nominated by engineering faculty and selected as the recipient by MEBA. Receiving $250 scholarships were cadets Benjamin Strack, Thomas Palmer and Christian Ladner.

Cadet Chris Rabalais was awarded the William Paul Ricker Corps Commander Scholarship. The scholarship is worth $2,400 and is presented each year to the Corps Commander. Ricker was Corps Commander in 1974-75 and died in an accident along with Corps Executive Officer Paul Titus while returning to Pelican Island after celebrating the completion of their licensing exams. A small loan fund was initially established by both families and then later increased significantly when Bill's father left a portion of his estate with which a scholarship fund was established.

Cadets Kevin McDonald, David Little and Christopher McEvoy each received the Anchor Watch Scholarship in the amount of $3,300 toward the cost of Summer Cruise 2008. The scholarship was presented by Captain Tom Lightsey and Captain Paul Brown on behalf of the Houston Pilots Association.

Cadet Drew McKinney received the Captain J.L. "Buster" Vaughn Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $2,500. The scholarship was presented by Stanley Vaughn '80 in memory of his father.

Cadet Kyle Entzel received a $500 scholarship as a part of the Captain and Mrs. Jack Smith Academic Awards. Cadets Timothy Cullen, Katie Quintana, James Fiore and Matthew Warren received the same scholarship with $100 awards each. The scholarships were presented by Captain Jack Smith.

Cadets Kevin McDonald, Joseph Sebes, Glen Younger, Tyler Crawford, Kimberly Mace and Melanie Britton were recognized as Kirby Inland Marine Scholars. Each cadet was awarded a $4,000 scholarship based on achievement and leadership ability to succeed in pursuing a career in the brown water industry. Recipients must be enrolled in a license option program, have or be currently enrolled in courses for junior cruise, achieved a grade point average in the top ten percent of their class, demonstrated leadership and showcased commitment to community, and be enrolled full time while in good academic standing.

Cadet Sara Broadrick was awarded the Kirby Inland Marine Mary Nell Valerius Memorial scholarship in the amount of $4,000. The scholarship is named in memory of Kirby Inland Marine President Steve Valerius' mother.
