Texas Maritime Academy Change of Command

The Texas Maritime Academy held its Change of Command ceremony on Thursday March 21, 2008. The Change of Command Ceremony is a time-honored tradition which formally restates to the personnel of the command the continuity of authority of the command. The change of command military ceremony is nearly unique in the world today, displaying a total transfer of responsibilities, authority, and accountability from one officer to another.

Board of Regents Chairman Bill Jones of the Texas A&M University System was the keynote speaker. He spoke to cadets about the opportunities and difficulties that being a leader can present, offering both personal and historical examples. Jones stressed the importance of understanding that being a good leader often means making a choice that is not popular but that is right. Other honored guests included TAMUS Chancellor Dr. Mike McKinney and Texas A&M University Interim Executive Vice President and Provost Dr. Jerry R. Strawser. Outgoing Cadet Captain Matthew White addressed the officers, Corps of Cadets and the audience, recognizing the trials and tribulations of both the last year as well as the four years graduating seniors have had before them.
