Captain Robert K. Baker Retires

The Texas Maritime Academy at Texas A&M University at Galveston hosted a retirement ceremony for Captain Robert K. Baker, U.S. Naval Reserve on Friday, April 18, 2008 at 1 p.m. on the Mitchell Campus of Texas A&M University at Galveston.

Capt. Baker received his bachelor’s of science degree at Texas A&M University at Galveston in Marine Transportation in 1977. He later earned a master’s in Business Administration from the University of Houston.

On June 22, 1978, Capt. Baker was the only member of his class commissioned as Ensign into U.S. Naval Reserve.

During his career in the reserve, he served in several units including; Naval Control of Shipping, Military Sealift Command, and the Merchant Marine Reserve Unit in a variety of training, administrative, and leadership roles.

Capt. Baker has earned many honors including the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Navy Unit Commendation Medal, the National Defense Medal, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal. In 2001, Capt. Baker was promoted to U.S. Navy Captain in the Merchant Marine Reserve, an honor only granted to 20 out of 2400 officers in the program.

Capt. Baker holds a current Unlimited Chief Mates and Master of 1,600 tons license, STCW 95. He is a senior lecturer in the Department of Maritime Administration at TAMUG and is employed with ExxonMobil as a LNG Shipping Advisor where he provides commercial, economic and operational shipping expertise for global projects.

Baker's family; wife, Lindy; sons Travis and Andrew; daughter Sarah; and parents Kenneth and Ruby were among the guest.
