My research focuses on behavioral ecology of female/calf pairs of highly endangered western gray whales on their feeding grounds off Sakhalin Island, Russia. I will be applying shore-based observational techniques (theodolite tracking, focal-animal behavior sampling, shore-based photo-identification) for examining the movement and respiration patterns, as well as habitat utilization on seasonal and annual bases.
