Personal Biography

I currently serve as the Director of Hong Kong Cetacean Research Project, and have been overseeing a long-term research and monitoring programme on Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis) and Indo-Pacific finless porpoises (Neophocaena phocaenoides) in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta region in the past 14 years.  I have been extensively involved the long-term research on several species of coastal small cetaceans in China and Taiwan, and my research team has successfully completed several major studies funded by the various government departments and NGOs in Hong Kong and China.  I have also been in charge of numerous marine mammal monitoring and environmental impact assessment projects in collaboration with local and international environmental consultant firms.  My Ph.D. dissertation study on fine-scale habitat use of Chinese white dolphins has provided valuable tools to identify the most critical habitats of dolphins in Hong Kong that need special attention for conservation.  In the past decade, I have authored or co-authored over 20 scientific papers on marine mammals.  As the Chairman of the Hong Kong Dolphin Conservation Society, I dedicate much effort to raise public awareness on whales, dolphins and porpoises, by producing many educational materials, holding public seminars and teacher workshops, writing popular articles and leading dolphin-watching tours.  In my leisure time, I have also served as the editor and publisher of several nature magazines and books to promote outdoor activities and wildlife conservation in Hong Kong.
