Offshore and Coastal Systems Engineering (OCSE)

Offshore and Coastal Systems Engineering (OCSE) is ABET-accredited in Ocean Engineering and has a curriculum that effectively synthesizes ocean engineering, civil engineering, and naval architecture to the design of ocean systems and structures.
The program is best known for design of large deep-water offshore structures typical of those used in offshore production of oil and gas. Many students come to us in pursuit of a career in this exciting and lucrative area, and many industrial companies regularly seek to hire our graduates. Study related to deep-water offshore engineering area of study addresses the design of marine structures and includes wind and wave forces, hydrodynamics, and ocean other aspects of ocean-related engineering including courses in areas such as Naval Architecture and Subsea Pipelines.
The program also includes instruction in Coastal Engineering. This part of the curriculum addresses the design of coastal structures such as breakwaters, seawalls and bulkheads, and well as coastal processes and projects such as beach nourishment and protection; and near-shore hydrodynamics. Employment opportunities exist with private industry, consulting firms and various government agencies.
The curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Offshore and Coastal Systems Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
This program was previously known as Maritime Systems Engineering and has been graduating students into this exciting field for 40 years.
The OCSE curriculum includes courses in written communication skills, humanities, social sciences and American heritage to ensure a well-rounded education. Courses that directly apply to maritime systems engineering include, but are not limited to: fluid mechanics, naval architecture, ocean wave mechanics, underwater acoustics, reinforced concrete wave mechanics, structural steel design, hydrodynamics of offshore structures, dynamics and vibrations, finite-element analysis in engineering design, introduction to coastal engineering, marine structures design and measurements in the ocean laboratory.
